A circular battery economy, one in which end-of-life batteries are reused, repurposed, or recycled, can help meet projected mineral supply gaps as a result of increasing demand for EVs while also reducing the supply chain’s reliance on the social and environmental harms associated with mineral extraction. Learn why investment is critical to making a circular economy a reality in this article from RMI's Monkgogi Buzwani. #climate #transportation #EVs #ElectricVehicles #EVbatteries #batterycircularity

Accelerating a clean, equitable transition to electric transportation
About us
Transportation is vital to every aspect of our lives, connecting people, generating economic opportunity, and providing access to critical goods. It also contributes more climate-warming emissions and air pollution in the U.S. than any other sector, disproportionately impacting the world’s most underserved and vulnerable populations. Electrifying transportation is critical to halt this growth in air pollution, emissions-related illness, and death — and to avoid catastrophic climate change. RMI’s Carbon-Free Transportation team works to accelerate the pace and scale of vehicle electrification in the United States, India, China, and other locations.

"Achieving a 60% rate of adoption for electric two-wheelers in 16 years’ time is ambitious. However, electric motorcycles are rapidly gaining traction in other emerging market countries like Kenya and Rwanda, where electric two-wheelers are already becoming widespread among commercial users. But an #EV boom in #Nigeria is not going to happen unless the right policies are in place, and unless EV financing is de-risked." -- Kelly Carlin, RMI Read more about Nigeria's efforts to decarbonize its #transportation sector in this article from African Business Magazine's Ben Payton. And make sure to check out our recent report, written in partnership with the Nigerian government, that outlines the challenges and opportunities facing the country as it works to electrify: https://lnkd.in/gWSvU3Wz #ElectricVehicles #EVs #EVcharging #climate #emobility #electrification

As #ElectricVehicle adoption continues to grow, so does pressure on the grid. In this interview with Replica, RMI's Ben Shapiro and Kiril Tchernyshyov they outline how GridUp, a tool that helps utilities forecast when and where energy and power demands will materialize from #EVs, can help utilities quickly, effectively, and confidently upgrade the grid to meet the increasing demand for EV charging infrastructure. Nigeria faces challenges as it works to further its ambitious transportation electrification goals, especially as it wrestles with the future of its longstanding fuel subsidy and oil’s impact on the cost of living in the country. Supporting e-mobility can be a way for Nigeria to reduce dependency on foreign imports, reduce costs, and build the economy of the future, while also tackling air pollution and emissions. RMI and Nigeria’s Energy Transition Office worked together to develop this vision brief for the country’s e-mobility sector to provide a framework stakeholders can use to advance their e-mobility efforts. It offers current and projected landscape analyses; identifies the environmental, economic, and social benefits of electrification; and describes what kinds of policies, finance mechanisms, and actions will rapidly, equitably, and efficiently electrify Nigeria’s transportation sector. #Nigeria #ElectricVehicles #ChargingInfrastructure #Transportation #EVs #climate

Join RMI and Uber in New York City during Climate Week for an in-person event about mobilizing financing for electric two- and three-wheelers to increase supply and unlock affordable lending. Who should attend: representatives from multilateral development banks, philanthropic institutions, corporate fleets, regional finance, and creditors. What you'll learn: Ways to mobilize financing for the electric two- and three-wheelers and lasting financing solutions to increase the supply of e2/3Ws for all purposes, including high mileage rideshare and cargo use. and examines how innovative financing can reduce costs for e2/3W consumers. Discussions highlight pioneering financial approaches to make e2/3Ws more affordable and readily available, emphasizing the roles of stakeholders in driving investment and supporting the electric mobility transition. "The metals that will be extracted into the future can also be recycled — unlike fossil fuels — meaning the world isn’t doomed to finding endless new sources. 'It’s a shift from a single-use, extractive and linear energy system that has shaped our past energy system where fossil fuels once burned become greenhouse gas,' said Daan Walter of RMI, a clean-energy think tank, “to a multi-use, renewable, and recycled energy system of the future, where the world traps solar and wind power with metals that are used again and again.'” Read more about the future of mining, and why a world more reliant on metals does not necessarily mean more extracting from the earth in this article from Bloomberg's Akshat Rathi: #climate #EVbatteries #EVs #electricvehicles #transportation #mining #batterycircularity

State governments face growing funding gaps for public road infrastructure projects. Some people believe that #electricvehicles are to blame, as their drivers don’t pay taxes on gas, a major source of government revenue. However, research shows that light-duty #EVs accounted for around one percent of lost funding. Transportation experts worry that policies that disproportionately affect EV drivers will hinder adoption. This paper from Atlas Public Policy’s Pooja Agarwal and Nate Graham describes current federal and state road funding sources; trends and factors driving increasing road costs; policy options that will fund roads sustainably and equitably; and much more. #climate #transportation #roadinfrastructure #cityplanning
