Explore the article behind the front cover of the latest issue of Environmental Science: Atmospheres 🌦 - Sensitivity analysis of planetary boundary layer parameterization on meteorological simulations in the Yangtze river delta region, China - from researchers at Shanghai University, Universiti Kebangsaan MalaysiaShanghai University of Engineering Science and University of Nottingham Malaysia! 👀   The planetary boundary layer (PBL) plays a crucial role in determining meteorological fields and the diffusion of atmospheric pollutants. It is important to accurately predict the PBL height for precise meteorological and air quality simulations. ⛅ 🌨   In this study the authors comprehensively evaluated the seasonal and diurnal variations of typical meteorological variables over the Yangtze River Delta region by using the Weather Research and Forecasting model using 4 major closure schemes – the results of which will be particularly helpful for air quality modellers!   Read this #OpenAccess work here ➡ https://lnkd.in/ewfvykx8 #RSCEnv #AtmosphericScience #Environment #Meteorology #AirQuality #Pollutants

We had the pleasure of interviewing #ESPI Emerging Investigator Prachi Joshi from University of Tübingen.   Prachi's article titled "Preferential adsorption and coprecipitation of permafrost organic matter with poorly crystalline iron minerals" investigates how the thawing of permafrost releases organic carbon, which can bind to poorly crystalline iron minerals, affecting its bioavailability.   🔗 Read the #OpenAccess paper at https://lnkd.in/eHpyH2W3   In her recent interview, Dr Joshi shares insights into her research journey and current work and also reflects on her career path, from her early work on water quality in aquifers to her current focus on permafrost systems.   Her advice to early career scientists? "Connections are incredibly important – the friends I made in graduate school and during my postdoc are also my collaborators today. It’s worth investing the time to nurture these connections by going to conferences, organizing scientific visits, and keeping in touch over the years. Related to this, I recommend keeping an open mind; you never know when a chance conversation during a coffee break at a meeting turns into a great project idea."   📰 Read the full interview here https://lnkd.in/ehDEt75B

Explore the article behind the back cover of the latest issue of Environmental Science: Atmospheres 🌦 - O3 chemistry of 2,5-dimethylfuran: mechanism development - from Niklas Illmann and Vera Rösgen at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal! 👀 Furan derivatives have been shown to represent major components of biomass burning (BB) smoke, and, to date, research on #furan oxidation mechanisms is dominated by daytime chemistry. 🌲 🔥 In this study the authors look into the night time oxidation of 2,5-dimethylfuran by O3 to provide a basis for assessing the importance of O3 chemistry on night time BB plumes. They were able to show that such reactions may contribute to the reactivity and acidity inside plumes. The results can be used for the development of a comprehensive O3 oxidation scheme for furans!
