Read an #openaccess article from the upcoming Focus Issue on Fossil Free Alternate Fuel Technology for IC Engines—publishing later this month. “Effects of Dimethyl Ether and Propane Blends on Knocking Behavior in a Boosted SI Engine” by Lian Soto Izquierdo (University of Michigan, USA; Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), Spain); Taehoon Han (University of Michigan, USA; University of Suwon, South Korea), and Andre Boehman (University of Michigan, USA). This study explores the use of dimethyl ether (DME) and propane blends as alternative fuels for spark-ignition (SI) engines. It analyzes the effects of different DME proportions in propane on knocking behavior, combustion characteristics, gaseous emissions, and particle number concentration under various intake pressures. Increased DME content in the blend heightened knocking tendencies, especially under higher intake pressures. However, a 20% DME blend achieved maximum brake torque without knocking in all tested conditions, showing potential for optimized fuel blending.
