About us

The influence of science, technology and innovation in how we live our lives has never been greater. Tomorrow it is likely to be greater still. Headlines that would have seemed like science fiction a few short years ago announce new technical realities. As universities prepare students for the future, at SFIS we’re making the future – or, rather, a set of plausible futures -- a focus of our teaching, research and service. We’re making innovation the object of systematic study and informed critique so that we might get what we truly want and need from our scientific and technological endeavors. At SFIS, we believe the future is for everyone.

AI can be a transformative tool in education when students can learn how to use it effectively. School for the Future of Innovation in Society professor Andrew Maynard designed a course to teach students about prompt engineering, or how to utilize large language models such as ChatGPT. This summer, 12 undergraduate and graduate students from the ASU College of Global Futures and the Thunderbird School of Global Management participated in the inaugural “Japan–U.S. Global Leadership Program in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” cohort in Japan. During the program, students and faculty from partnering universities worked together to integrate AI across sectors like agriculture, health care, community service and government policies, with a focus on Japan's society. The program included lectures, workshops, company visits, field trips to local attractions and cultural learning experiences in Hiroshima. “I am very honored and grateful for being selected for Fulbright,” said Rebecca Stuch, a doctoral student in the Innovation in Global Development program. “While it was a challenging experience to write my application, it really made me clarify what I wanted to do and provided me an opportunity to tell a story about myself and the connection to my research.” The Fulbright Award will support her doctoral dissertation research on national identity and digital storytelling in the Republic of Moldova. “By partnering with Future17, students get to work on meaningful projects aimed at creating positive outcomes for the planet and humanity,” said Eusebio Scornavacca, director of the School for the Future of Innovation in Society at ASU. “The experiential learning component embedded in the process allows us to co-create unbelievable learning opportunities, where students can expand and enhance their academic journeys in a global setting." Future17 offers a unique learning environment that embraces a collaborative model. At the start of the semester, students are placed on a team with peers from other participating universities. The multi-institutional approach ensures cultural awareness and understanding are at the forefront. Each team is then matched with a corporation to advise on sustainability-related issues.
