  • ICYMI: SeaWorld San Diego recently welcomed an Emperor penguin chick to the colony! Our aviculture team provided world-class care to ensure the health and well-being of this endangered chick. Thank you, Association of Zoos and Aquariums for the share! To read more about Pearl's story, visit https://bit.ly/3NBW07E

Meet Pearl, the first chick to emperor penguin chick to hatch at SeaWorld San Diego since 2010! 🐧 A recent scientific study found a record low for Antarctic sea ice coverage adversely impacting emperor penguin populations. Four of the five emperor penguin colonies studied experienced total breeding failure due to the lack of sea ice. “Disappearing sea ice is becoming more frequent as our planet continues to warm and is having a devastating effect on penguin populations,” said COO of Penguins International, Katie Propp. “The good news is that there is a future for this species if we take action to fight climate change and support organizations like SeaWorld that provide human care and maintain genetic biodiversity for emperor penguins in their facilities. SeaWorld San Diego is the only place in the western hemisphere outside Antarctica where people can see Emperor penguins. Join us in celebrating this rare and joyous hatching!
