About us

Powering Progress sets out Shell’s strategy to transition our business to net-zero emissions by 2050. This includes reducing emissions from our own operations and the energy products we sell to customers. With 95% of Shell's emissions coming from the energy products we provide, achieving net zero emissions relies on collaborating with customers to help them access a secure supply of energy that is affordable and increasingly low carbon. For low carbon solutions to be widely accessible, commercially viable and have an impact at scale, both our customers and Shell need to achieve this transition profitably and sustainably. Shell Low Carbon Solutions (LCS) is committed to providing the secure energy customers need today while transforming to win in a low carbon future. By combining Shell's extensive sectoral experience and solutions expertise, we design, deliver, and scale impactful decarbonisation pathways for customers in hard-to-abate transport and industry sectors, as well as Shell’s own operations. Nick Osborne, Shell's General Manager, Global Environmental Products Trading, had the opportunity to meet with attendees at the GBTA | Global Business Travel Association Convention, sharing experiences and strategies to help decarbonise the business travel sector.      Here are three takeaways for hard-to-abate sectors:    1. Avoid, Reduce - then Compensate: decarbonisation strategies should focus on avoiding and reducing your carbon output as a priority. Consider a multifaceted approach, with compensation key to short-term goals while other solutions are scaled.     2. Remain diligent: assessing the long-term effectiveness of carbon credit projects is vital if you want them to remain impactful.     3. Collaboration and investment is needed to scale emerging solutions: collaborative efforts have the potential to drive more efficient resource utilisation. Working together with customers, suppliers and other industry stakeholders can be key to developing sector-specific decarbonisation strategies.   We hope everyone who joined Nick found the discussion valuable. Look out for upcoming webinars where we will take a deeper dive into the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors.     #CarbonCredits #Decarbonisation #EnvironmentalImpact #GBTA2024

The path to net zero must start with avoiding and reducing emissions. But where that’s not possible, compensating for emissions with carbon credits can play an important role. Shell works with businesses on their decarbonisation journeys - prioritising emissions avoidance and reductions in their operations and value chains, with the option of using verified carbon credits to offset remaining emissions. Learn more about our work on carbon compensation in the video below. Discover more about our work in this space here: https://lnkd.in/e3pqBsAA  #PoweringProgress #Decarbonisation #CarbonCredits

  • Hear what our General Manager, Global Environmental Products, Nick Osborne, has to say about decarbonising business travel at this year’s GBTA | Global Business Travel Association Convention.   Alongside a panel of other experts, Nora Lovell Marchant, Esq., VP Global Sustainability at American Express Global Business Travel, and Carlos Mauricio García A., Corporate Affairs Policy and Standards Manager at Qatar Airways, he’ll be deep diving into the future of business travel to explore: - The role that different decarbonisation strategies could play, from avoiding and reducing emissions, to compensating emissions, and how the roles might evolve and shift. - How international regulations like Carbon Offsetting and Reductions Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and EU Emissions Trading Scheme may influence business travel. - Carbon credits, and the role they can play while the aviation industry works to scale decarbonisation solutions like sustainable aviation fuel. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet with Shell experts at our GBTA stand. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eu6hgbgX   #SustainableAviation #PoweringProgress #GBTA2024

  • We are pleased to share that our Executive Vice President, Anna Mascolo has been appointed to the Board of Directors at Raízen. Raizen is a Brazilian energy company, formed as a joint venture between Shell plc and Cosan in 2011. Raizen is a vertically integrated energy company, operating across sugarcane cultivation, ethanol production, distribution of fuels and lubricants across Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, as well as investment in renewable energy solutions. With its unique blend of traditional downstream supply, distribution, retail, and B2B channels, combined with agri-based sugar and ethanol value chains, Raizen is well positioned to drive decarbonisation profitably and at scale. In 2023, Raizen produced 3.12 billion litres of ethanol, making it one of the world’s biggest bioethanol producers, delivering some of the lowest carbon intensity biofuels available today. Raizen is also looking to expand further into the ethanol value chain with opportunities in bio-methane (RNG), SAF (alcohol-to-jet), and bio-chemicals. #BioFuels #EnergyTransition #Decarbonisation

Today Shell announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for Polaris, a carbon capture project which will capture approximately 650,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from the Shell-owned Scotford refinery and chemicals complex*. Polaris will build on the success of the Shell-operated Quest carbon capture and storage facility at Scotford which has safely captured and stored more than nine million tonnes of CO2 since 2015.   Carbon capture and storage is a key technology to achieve climate goals and for Shell to become a net-zero energy business by 2050.   #PoweringProgress #CCS *Cautionary note: https://lnkd.in/gi_wDYdR

Today Shell announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for Polaris, a carbon capture project at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park, Scotford in Alberta, Canada. Polaris will capture approximately 650,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from the Shell-owned Scotford refinery and chemicals complex. In addition to the Polaris FID, Shell also announced FID to proceed with the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub in partnership with ATCO EnPower. The first phase of Atlas will provide permanent underground storage for CO2 captured by the Polaris project. Carbon capture and storage is a key technology to achieve the Paris Agreement climate goals and both the Polaris and Atlas projects are important steps in reducing emissions from our own operations. Once built, Polaris (100% Shell-owned) will have the potential to reduce Scope 1 emissions at the Scotford refinery by up to 40% and by up to 22% at the chemicals complex. Polaris will build on the success of the Shell-operated Quest carbon capture and storage facility at Scotford which has safely captured and stored more than nine million tonnes of CO2 since 2015.   Last year I visited Scotford including the plot space for Polaris, next to Quest. I met the teams who have worked so hard to get to this important milestone. Many congratulations to everyone involved. Both projects are expected to begin operations toward the end of 2028.
