Nick Osborne, Shell's General Manager, Global Environmental Products Trading, had the opportunity to meet with attendees at the GBTA | Global Business Travel Association Convention, sharing experiences and strategies to help decarbonise the business travel sector.      Here are three takeaways for hard-to-abate sectors:    1. Avoid, Reduce - then Compensate: decarbonisation strategies should focus on avoiding and reducing your carbon output as a priority. Consider a multifaceted approach, with compensation key to short-term goals while other solutions are scaled.     2. Remain diligent: assessing the long-term effectiveness of carbon credit projects is vital if you want them to remain impactful.     3. Collaboration and investment is needed to scale emerging solutions: collaborative efforts have the potential to drive more efficient resource utilisation. Working together with customers, suppliers and other industry stakeholders can be key to developing sector-specific decarbonisation strategies.   We hope everyone who joined Nick found the discussion valuable. We have an exciting update to share from Avelia, our blockchain-powered book and claim platform for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) – American Express Global Business Travel has confirmed its commitment with a new agreement with Shell Aviation.   Avelia has achieved a lot since its launch in June 2022 and Amex GBT’s recommitment to the platform sets it up for continued growth and signals a resounding endorsement of its impact to date and its potential to drive industry-wide change.   To date, Avelia has: 🤝Supported over 30 airlines and corporate customers to access the environmental attributes of SAF ✈ Injected more than 10 million gallons of SAF into the fuel network since launch, at nine airports around the world ✅ Become one of the only SAF programmes to receive external assurance regarding conformance to carbon accounting and book and claim system requirements of the SFC-MIT SAF Guidelines following the approach of ISO 14064-3.   The success of Shell’s and Amex GBT’s commitment highlights the important role of collaboration across the value chain in decarbonising aviation.   Explore Avelia here: https://lnkd.in/e_3ZKqYb   #Avelia #SAF #AmexGBT   Cautionary note: https://lnkd.in/gi_wDYdR

The path to net zero must start with avoiding and reducing emissions. But where that’s not possible, compensating for emissions with carbon credits can play an important role. We are pleased to share that our Executive Vice President, Anna Mascolo has been appointed to the Board of Directors at Raízen. Raizen is a Brazilian energy company, formed as a joint venture between Shell plc and Cosan in 2011. Raizen is a vertically integrated energy company, operating across sugarcane cultivation, ethanol production, distribution of fuels and lubricants across Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, as well as investment in renewable energy solutions. With its unique blend of traditional downstream supply, distribution, retail, and B2B channels, combined with agri-based sugar and ethanol value chains, Raizen is well positioned to drive decarbonisation profitably and at scale. In 2023, Raizen produced 3.12 billion litres of ethanol, making it one of the world’s biggest bioethanol producers, delivering some of the lowest carbon intensity biofuels available today. Today Shell announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for Polaris, a carbon capture project which will capture approximately 650,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from the Shell-owned Scotford refinery and chemicals complex*. Polaris will build on the success of the Shell-operated Quest carbon capture and storage facility at Scotford which has safely captured and stored more than nine million tonnes of CO2 since 2015.   Carbon capture and storage is a key technology to achieve climate goals and for Shell to become a net-zero energy business by 2050.   #PoweringProgress #CCS *Cautionary note: https://lnkd.in/gi_wDYdR
