🌟 Embracing her Mexican heritage through the power of food and community, Julie Deustua, Senior Manager of Field Marketing for Sodexo USA supporting the United States Marine Corps, is a proud member of the Sodexo Organization for Latinos (SOL) Employee Business Resource Group. “Although I no longer live in Mexico, I’m fortunate to live in San Diego, close to the border with Tijuana. I enjoy traveling there or to Mexico City as often as possible to enjoy authentic Mexican food,” Julie shares. “The way I experience life is through food. Whether it’s a humble street taco or a gourmet meal, sharing food with friends and family is my love language.” In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Julie reflects on the value of the connections she’s made with Latinos and Latinas across the country. She finds it inspiring to see so many people actively supporting the Latinx community through SOL. “As a Latina born and raised in Mexico, I understand the journey of professional development, especially for those who have experienced immigration. It shapes our values and strengthens our commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion on our teams,” she adds. #SodexoWomenRising Lori Martin, Director of Quality Assurance & Control at Sodexo Technical Services - Youngstown, shares her insights on the barriers women still face in leadership. Lori explained that although women make up over half of the U.S. population, they account for only 10.6% of Fortune 500 CEOs as of 2023. Additionally, women in the U.S. often earn less than men for the same work and are frequently expected to take on more responsibilities at home. Despite surpassing men in educational attainment, women remain underrepresented in the highest-paying careers and tend to earn less on average, even with a higher degree. Lori has actively supported women in her industry and community throughout her career. She believes all relationships, including business, matter beyond mere transactions. Lori advocates for work-life balance for women, encourages career development through open conversations, and fights for equal pay and well-deserved promotions. She also takes a stand against disrespectful behavior to ensure women are treated with dignity. Beyond work, Lori has organized Thanksgiving Dinners for 15 years, recognizing the disproportionate impact of food insecurity on women and their careers. Lori has highlighted Sodexo's strong advocacy for women in the workplace, mainly through our Employee Business Resource Groups (EBRGs), which promote inclusion and provide networking and development opportunities. Through her EBRG, she mentored a young woman through Sodexo's Afghan Refugee Mentorship Program, offering guidance on career websites, resumes, and more. Lori found these volunteer efforts to be incredibly fulfilling. She believes that everyone, regardless of title, has the power to lead and influence change. While company-wide initiatives are crucial, individual actions can collectively drive organizations toward greater gender equality in leadership. #WomenInLeadership #Mentorship #Diversity #Inclusion

This year, the Beast of the East culinary competition hosted by the Marine Corps Installations East brought together four talented teams in an exciting battle to showcase their skills and creativity! Each team was challenged to create their own custom menu, featuring an appetizer, main course, side dish, dessert, and signature drink—all in just four hours. The Gold Medal and People's Choice awards went to MSgt (Master Sergeant) Rodney Bynum & GySgt (Gunnery Sergeant) Dustin Lewis from the Marine Corps Base Food Service Office. If GySgt Dustin Lewis's name sounds familiar, it’s because he also won the Food Network show Chopped in the Military Cooking Competition! Sodexo had two excellent teams participate in the event, and we are incredibly proud of their efforts: 🥈 Silver Medal: Samantha Harkless & Isaac Harkless, Sodexo Production Managers Congratulations to all the teams for putting on an unforgettable culinary showcase. We are proud of everyone involved! https://ow.ly/I98q50Tt3GP #SodexoUSA #FoodService #Culinary #FoodNetwork United States Marine Corps
