New phishing technique alert: Sophos X-Ops has observed a rise in #phishing emails that exploit the scalable vector graphics (SVG) format. SVG is a file type that contains XML-like text instructions to render an image. These SVG phishing emails are often highly targeted, embedding the recipient’s email address or name within the SVG file. They also frequently abuse popular file-sharing platforms like DocuSign, Dropbox, and SharePoint, displaying fake login screens to steal credentials. Andrew Brandt, Principal Researcher at Sophos, explains, "Most anti-spam technologies scan file attachments for known malicious patterns. However, .svg files may not be flagged as threats because they are typically used as graphics files. Even when anti-spam tools inspect .svg files, threat actors may structure them in ways that evade detection. Some content scanning technologies might not recognize the malicious patterns embedded within the file. We hope this research raises awareness about this emerging threat vector, making SVG-based attacks less effective over time." https://bit.ly/4hIzVkm
