Not all Data Scientists are the same. At Spotify, we built a framework, using a mixed-method approach, to better understand who our data practitioners are. Read more about the 6 distinct personas that compose the data practitioner universe at Spotify. https://hubs.li/Q02P8dSF0

“If you haven't heard of Backstage, firstly where have you been😁”. We talk a lot about Backstage here because our homegrown internal developer portal (IDP) is such a fundamental part of how our teams do their work at Spotify — reducing the frustrating parts of software development (getting lost in a maze of infrastructure, tools, and unclear processes) while boosting the good parts (learning, collaboration, and staying in the flow). Thanks to Gartner for helping more companies understand the options they have for adopting the platform. And if you haven’t tried it yet (or it’s been a while), learn more about how Spotify and Backstage from Spotify can help you improve developer experience and productivity where you work. https://lnkd.in/dii3NEui
#Backstage has become one of the most mentioned technologies in my client calls with platform teams over the last 18 months and I decided we needed some dedicated advice for Gartner clients evaluating, using and (in some cases) abusing the technology. "Assessing Backstage for Your Internal Developer Portal" (https://lnkd.in/dBwHftcw) is now available to Gartner for Tech Pro's subscribers. If you haven't heard of Backstage, firstly where have you been😁, but more importantly, Backstage is an open-source framework developed by Spotify (Backstage from Spotify) for building internal developer portals (IDP) with one of the healthiest contributor communities of all Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) projects. Platform teams implementing developer portals and software catalogs have found it a source of inspiration, innovation, and frustration—the reasons for which are covered in the research. The super-short summary is "do your homework"... evaluate the upfront and ongoing development effort to use the OSS framework, do a detailed analysis of the status and capability of the plug-ins you care most about for _your_ portal, and know the alternatives, whether commercially supported products based on Backstage or other IDP products. Lots more details and guidance in the published research. And, if you're looking for more general advice for implementing internal developer portals look no further than "How to Implement Internal Developer Portals" (https://lnkd.in/dnjR25Gg) or come along to #GartnerApps (https://lnkd.in/dHk_H93x) Summit in London on September 9-10 where I'll be presenting on the topic. #platformengineering #developerexperience, #dx #internaldeveloperportals #internaldeveloperplatforms

How do you know if your org is ready for an internal developer portal (IDP)?🤔 Do you feel like you spend more time looking for things — documentation, internal APIs, the owners of that service you depend on, that email with a list of tech requirements, that ticket for provisioning more cloud resources — than you do actually building things? Maybe your org is ready to try Spotify Portal — our Backstage-powered IDP that’s simple to set up, easy to maintain, and designed to improve developer experience across your org by taming infrastructure chaos. So you can focus on building again. We’re looking for a fresh batch of beta testers!
