This semester, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian internship program features a pair of McNair Scholars in Melanie Muñoz and Brian Briones. • McNair Scholar and senior art major, Anjelica Cantu, has been featured on KRIS 6 News for her research and sculpture of La Llorona—a legendary figure in Mexican folklore known for themes of love, betrayal, and grief. Anjelica dedicated her McNair Summer Internship exploring the emotional depth of La Llorona’s tale, collaborating with South Texas artists to understand the impact of folklore on artistic expression. Her journey led her to craft powerful 3D sculptures, connecting deeply with the story through her hands-on work with ceramics. Anjelica will be presenting her research and photos of her artwork to the public, along with the rest of the McNair Scholars, on Monday, Nov. 4th, at 1 p.m. at the McNair Annual Research Symposium.
