An Open University researcher has made a breakthrough in the fight against antibiotic resistance, discovering potential new antibiotics in the brine of an historic English spa town. Dr Michael Macey, a specialist in extremophiles, found unique microbes capable of inhibiting the growth of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, the superbug more commonly known as MRSA. This exciting discovery could help address the global health crisis of antibiotic resistance. The research is part of the OU’s Open Societal Challenges and highlights the potential of exploring extreme environments for medical advances. As a teenager in India, Dr Anushree Srivastava was captivated by space exploration after watching the Columbia shuttle mission.
