In October, the S&P 500 snapped its winning streak, falling almost 1% in the 3rd week but still up nearly 22% YTD. Modest market weakness ensued during the third week of the month; interestingly, that week of October is historically negative. All sectors in the S&P 500 finished lower except technology stocks, which marched higher with expectations of more substantial earnings. The NASDAQ has been in the leading position after the selloff. Notably, the market’s momentum and breadth are beginning to give divergent signals due to the recent price appreciation. Equity markets closed a volatile trading week lower, as a modest rise in U.S. bond yields and better-than-expected economic data did little to lift sentiment ahead of an important week of economic data. The role of hedge funds in investor portfolios has evolved over the years, marked by changing market dynamics, regulatory shifts, and investor preferences. While hedge funds have long been touted to enhance returns and provide diversification, their reputation has been challenged by high fees and periods of underperformance compared to public markets. Following a jumbo-sized rate cut to start the Fed’s easing cycle, recent jobs and GDP data indicated that the US economy remains on solid footing. Manufacturing activity, however, remains in contraction territory, and inflation continues to ease at a slow but steady pace. Based on current data, the Fed should continue to cut rates, but slowing the pace to 25 bp rate cut per meeting seems reasonable. Historically, September should be a month of seasonal weakness for the stock market; remarkably, the S&P 500 has a new all-time high and continues to find support at around 5,700. Equities also continue to pull ahead of the median market strategist index price target for the end of the year. In addition to a bullish tape, the Fed is easing. With one jumbo cut already in hand for September, futures are pricing 160 bps of rate cuts over the next twelve months.
