From 3rd to 5th September 2024, the Turkish-German Energy Partnership #TGEP organised a delegation visit to Landau in der Pfalz and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) to explore innovations in lithium extraction from deep geothermal waters. Lithium is a critical resource for battery production and the global energy transition, and the visit was part of the TGEP’s Working Group for Renewable Energy, Energy Infrastructure, and Sector Coupling. The Turkish delegation, comprising government, business, and academic representatives, visited EnergieSüdwest AG, where they learned about the company’s work in energy supply and local geothermal initiatives. Discussions also covered Türkiye’s geothermal potential, particularly in Western Anatolia, with presentations from representatives of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Türkiye, JESDER | Geothermal Power Plant Investors Association, Izmir High Technology University and Afyon Kocatepe University. Vulcan Energy Resources, Europe’s largest lithium producer, shared insights into their sustainable lithium extraction from geothermal brine, with the delegation touring Vulcan’s facilities. The visit concluded at KIT, where Turkish delegates engaged with scientists on advanced lithium extraction methods. This visit fostered valuable knowledge exchange and strengthened future collaboration. #LithiumExtraction #GeothermalEnergy #TurkishGermanEnergyPartnership #TGEP #EnergyTransition
