We're excited to be working with Airbus to conduct research on the use of superconducting technologies in the aviation industry. Hydrogen-powered aircraft represent one of the most promising opportunities for decarbonisation, powered by superconducting engines using liquid hydrogen as both a fuel source and a coolant. Both Toshiba and Airbus have been researching superconductive technologies for many years and will now come together to explore the feasibility of co-developing a motor for use in aircraft. These 4G Hubs, manufactured by Toshiba, represent a significant evolution in the connectivity and functionality that the smart meter network can deliver, and demonstrate our commitment to driving innovation to help Britain get more connected and lead smarter, greener lives. Sam Manson, Senior Asset and Supply Chain Development Manager at DCC, said: “Today is a significant milestone for the Comms Hubs & Networking Programme as we’ve had the first 4G Production Comms Hubs delivered into the UK. In collaboration with Kawasaki Tsurumi Rinko Bus Co., Ltd. and Drive Electro Technology Co., Ltd., we’re launching a demonstration project to confirm the effectiveness of a super-rapid charging battery powered by a pantograph. Starting in November 2025, this will be Japan's first public e-bus operation using this technology. The project will demonstrate the feasibility of commercial operation of an e-bus charged by a pantograph, powered by Toshiba’s SCiB™ rechargeable batteries.
