We're pleased to have Dr. Matyas Szanto, PhD as a Visiting Fulbright Researcher this semester! Dr. Szántó, an Assistant Professor from the Department of Control Engineering and Information Technology at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BUTE) in Budapest, Hungary, was awarded a Fulbright grant and will be spending the upcoming 4 months as a visiting researcher at UNT. Throughout this time, Dr. Szántó will focus on cooperative and low-latency environment mapping for autonomous vehicles, working alongside Dr. Qing Yang, Dr. Song Fu, and the VAIL Lab. At his home institution, Dr. Szántó has been studying novel 3D mapping techniques for autonomous vehicles using crowdsourcing methods. As part of an international research effort, he was part of a team that published several articles on navigation-optimisation of self-driving vehicles using cooperative mapping. He has been collaborating with the BME Automated Drive Lab team to create immersive virtual visualisation possibilities for a Digital Twin model of an autonomous vehicle control development environment. Some of Dr. Szántó’s accomplishments: - Visiting researcher at University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand 2024 - TED Speaker at TEDxBME (AI for Computer Science Education) 2023 - Earned his PhD from the Doctoral School of Informatics (Dissertation title: Crowdsourcing-Based Map Construction Using Image Processing Methods) 2023 - Co-director of the Computer Vision and Machine Learning Research Group at BUTE From 2022 - Secretary of The Hungarian Industry 4.0 National Technology Platform Association Work Group for Employment, Education and Training From 2018 - Lecturer of Computer Vision Courses at BUTE From 2016 Follow along as we collaborate with Dr. Szántó on this exciting journey! #UNT #ArtificialIntelligence #Research
