The recent American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) Meeting, held October 16-19 in San Antonio, was a great showing for our Pitt and UPMC orthopaedic care teams! Among Pitt-UPMC faculty representatives, Dr. Justin Arner delivered a podium presentation, Dr. Albert Lin led two instructional course lectures (ICLs), a panel, and a lunch workshop, and Dr. Matt Kelly of UPMC Pinnacle also led an ICL. Other Pitt-UPMC faculty participants included Dr. Christopher Schmidt and Dr. Nathan Formaini. The meeting was another opportunity for Pitt-UPMC alumni to shine, including Dr. Greg Gasbarro and Dr. Josh Port, both former residents, and sports alum Dr. Andy Sheean, who led an ICL and participated in a panel. Dr. Donald Yealy, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President, UPMC spoke at the Washington County Chamber of Commerce breakfast event. He discussed the recent merger of UPMC Washington and UPMC Greene and outlined future plans for the hospitals. Yealy emphasized UPMC’s commitment to invest $300 million over the next decade to enhance services and upgrade facilities in Washington and Greene, and to increase the UPMC Washington Foundation’s assets to $40 million. He also highlighted the long-standing clinical collaborations between UPMC and UPMC Washington in various specialties, which have provided care for over 10,000 patients annually. https://lnkd.in/d_T9ps5A

According to the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 40% of U.S. adolescents have experienced feelings of hopelessness, one in five have contemplated suicide and almost one in 10 have attempted suicide. According to a new JAMA Network Open study from #PittMed and UPMC, youths living in neighborhoods with more community assets — like parks, libraries, health services and transportation options — were less likely to report feelings of hopelessness.
