The housing crisis in Australia is reaching a tipping point. Anglicare Australia’s recent Rental Affordability Snapshot reveals alarming statistics for essential workers: only 3.7% of rentals are affordable for teachers, 1.4% for nurses, and less than 1% for early childhood educators and hospitality workers. In this article, our co-Director Professor Nicky Morrison explores the significant benefits of affordable housing solutions in creating more sustainable, connected communities, and reducing job-housing imbalances. Drawing on international best practices, Australia now has a pivotal opportunity to adopt long-term, sustainable strategies that support essential workers while ensuring broader housing affordability. https://lnkd.in/gPD4dESu Davina Rooney Monica Richter Richa Sud Christopher Lee Greg Woodhams Lynne Gallagher Siobhain O'Leary Greg Morrison Vanita Yadav Ehsan Noroozinejad Thomas Longden Pejman Sharafi Maria Rashidi Sammy Cheung David Harding David Borger Wendy Hayhurst Caitlin McDowell Bill Parasiris Michelle Lee Dr Rhonda Itaoui, PhD Neil Perry Emma Power Awais Piracha

About us
In affiliation with the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS), based at Western Sydney University, the newly formed Urban Transformations Research Centre (UTRC) delivers a broad scope focus across social sciences, the built environment and engineering to address the grand challenges around life and work within the urban environment. It is centred on the complex challenges posed by the contemporary urban environment. These include, but are not restricted to, the environment and climate emergency which encompasses achieving net zero; healthy buildings; resilient communities; the circular economy, and the minimisation of waste and the reuse of materials. The UTRC also focuses on the health and wellbeing, physical and social determinants that make up sustainable urban environments. As such, the UTRC’s research pursues the holistic transformation of the urban environment that centres on liveability and life support systems, including energy, water, materials, and health systems, offering rigorous evidence-based technical, policy and governance solutions. With respect for Aboriginal cultural protocol and out of recognition that its campuses occupy their traditional lands, Western Sydney University acknowledges the Darug, Eora, Dharawal (also referred to as Tharawal) and Wiradjuri peoples and thanks them for their support of its work in their lands (Greater Western Sydney and beyond).

Listen to UTRC’s Sebastian Pfautsch GAICD in this important interview on 2ser (107.3) with Lachlan Ford They discuss the very current and pertinent issues, and their intersection, demand for more and more housing development and climate change driven rise in the number and intensity of heatwaves. The importance of Adaptation to heat in the built environment, with climate impacts combined with the urban heat island effect, especially in Western Sydney, where today extreme heat costs the region's economy $1.45 billion p.a., expected to more than quadruple by 2070. And, of course, the very real human cost in terms of loss of life and significant health impacts. Is adaptation to heat impacts possible? Will the coming summer provide the wake-up call to get serious about it? https://lnkd.in/gi_YurdK Nicky Morrison Greg Morrison Vanita Yadav Thomas Longden Ehsan Noroozinejad Pejman Sharafi Maria Rashidi W. UTRC is thrilled to announce Dr Ehsan Noroozinejad, one of our leading researchers, has been awarded a prestigious James Martin Institute for Public Policy 2024 Policy Challenge Grant. Ehsan will be leading on the awarded project "Integrated Policies for Affordable & Net-Zero Housing" The housing crisis is arguably the greatest policy challenge facing contemporary Australia. The private housing market, as well as the rental market, are facing levels of strain not seen in generations. This crisis severely affects diverse age groups, from baby boomers seeking smaller dwellings to young families grappling with high costs. It has become a concerning issue that requires immediate action. Concurrently, the building industry contributes significantly to carbon emissions, and reaching net-zero targets is becoming another major challenge for the state government. The crisis calls for innovative solutions within Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), including prefab and modular housing, which have proven effective and efficient globally. However, Australia faces a significant policy gap that delays the widespread adoption of these methods, with the lack of design guidelines adding an additional roadblock. This project will target the dual issues of affordable housing & environmental sustainability. Greg Morrison Nicky Morrison Sebastian Pfautsch GAICD W. Yesterday we hosted the McLennan family from Perth at Western Sydney University. Their “big lap” of Australia is designed to be fully electric, busting the myth of EV range anxiety and demonstrating our common Net Zero future.
Professor Greg Morrison from Western Sydney University invited us to speak with his team about our experiences travelling Australia all-electric. Greg leads the Urban Transformations Research Centre (UTRC) which is helping towns and cities around the country to achieve their net zero goals. It's encouraging to hear about the communities taking advantage of the opportunities the energy transition presents and moving towards more sustainable ways of living where both people and the environment benefit. Thanks for all that you are doing Greg Morrison! 🌍🌳⚡♥️ https://lnkd.in/grvdTECu
