The challenge during stroke recovery, especially during the chronic phase, is repairing the neural connections to help facilitate communication between the brain and upper extremities. Amber Lewis, an occupational therapist at WakeMed, explains that Paired VNS Therapy enables stroke therapists to activate the brain to produce more functional outcomes for chronic stroke survivors. How much does brain injury fatigue affect your occupational or physical therapy appointments with stroke survivors? And what tips would you add? 🗯️ Tell us in the comments This shared content is for informational purposes only and does not reflect any association with Vivistim. To review Vivistim safety information, visit https://qrcodes.pro/vbdPY7. ---Reposted from Moxie OT via Instagram Coping With Brain Fatigue After a Stroke or Brain Injury Guest Blogger: Anne Momgbet, OTS Having a brain injury or stroke can lead to many long-term effects, including chronic fatigue. This post-injury brain fatigue is a common problem that can make daily life much more challenging. After a moderate to severe brain injury such as a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or a stroke, it's very common to experience mental and physical exhaustion on a regular basis. This is known as post-traumatic brain injury fatigue or post-TBI fatigue. Several studies have confirmed that fatigue is one of the most common lingering symptoms after a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Up to 70% of TBI survivors experience fatigue. It differs from normal tiredness in that it is generally more severe and unrelenting. Occupational therapy (OT) can help you explore your daily habits, roles, and routines and make simple modifications to improve your fatigue. Your occupational therapist may suggest energy conservation strategies or provide tips and tricks to improve your sleep. If you want to learn more about how occupational therapy can help with post-injury fatigue, contact us today! Clinical Discussion: Since it's evident that quality rehabilitation over the continuum of care is paramount to stroke survivors' long-term outcomes, shouldn't there be a hyperfocus on optimizing the amount of occupational or physical therapy patients receive? 🗯️ Comment below with your perspective on the Stroke Journal article "Rehabilitation Therapy Doses Are Low After Stroke and Predicted by Clinical Factors." To review Vivistim safety information, visit https://qrcodes.pro/vbdPY7. #mondaymotivation #motivationmonday --- Reposted from Master Stroke Coaching via Instagram: The idea that stroke recovery stops after the first year continues to be perpetuated, even though it’s not true. While every stroke and stroke survivor is different, there is always potential for progress, even years later. Why the Myth Persists After someone has a stroke, the brain’s neuroplasticity, or its ability to change and adapt, is at an all-time high for the first 3-6 months. This means that you and your healthcare team may have seen some speedy progress in that time. However, after the first 3-6 months, the brain’s neuroplastic ability begins to slow, and progress does too. Healthcare professionals likely don’t want to give someone false hope, so they downplay the amount of recovery potential. However, this can be detrimental to someone’s recovery journey and, ultimately, isn’t helpful as no one knows how much someone will recover until they try! The Reality of Ongoing Recovery Advancements in neuroscience have shown us the brain’s amazing ability to form new neural connections at any age, given the right conditions. So, while progress does slow down in the years following a stroke, it doesn’t stop. #staystrong

In our stroke awareness blog, we asked our Vivistim Ambassadors to tell us how they would fix this broken system for stroke survivors if they had a 🪄 magic wand. 🪄 “Make stroke support groups easier to find by listing them in a hospital, doctor’s office, or even published in local newspapers or internet publications.” 🪄 “More stroke education and the fact that stroke is mostly talked about and looked at as something that only happens to older people.” 🪄 “Make all the cutting-edge treatments acknowledged and coverable by insurance! Stroke survivors need bold solutions to inspire hope…insurance is way behind the curve on treatments!” 🪄 “I would fix some therapists attitudes and decisions that let us go too soon from PT/OT because they don’t know what we are capable of achieving with our drive, determination, and dedication.“ 🪄 “Along with the information that the community puts out about detecting a stroke, they should have better info about life post-stroke.” What would you add? With Vivistim Therapy, occupational or physical therapy tasks are paired with vagus nerve stimulation to help increase neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to create new neural pathways and relearn movement. Vivistim Therapy in practice: This example demonstrates how to apply Paired VNS Therapy when a stroke survivor's goal is to be able to tie shoes again or put their hair in a ponytail with a hair tie. VNS Triggering (choose one or more): 🔷 When affected hand attempts to pick up laces/headband 🔷 When attempting to tie laces, hair ties ⬆️ To Upgrade: Occlude vision or provide different hair ties of different tensile strength. ⬇️ To Downgrade: Patient practices with item (shoe with laces or doll with hair) on table.
