The results of the Vivistim pivotal 108-person, multicenter, triple-blinded, randomized controlled clinical trial were published in The Lancet and show that Paired VNS Therapy generates two to three times greater improvement in hand and arm function for stroke survivors than rehabilitation therapy alone. 👏 There really is cause for hope. There are some new novel mechanisms of engaging our body’s natural ability to recover in ways that will help facilitate people to gain the ability to do things in their daily life. ~ Teresa Jacobson Kimberley, PT, PhD, FAPTA, Director, Brain Recovery Lab, MGH Institute of Health Professions Join us in showing appreciation this month to the dedicated physical therapists who are turning frustration into celebration for their post-stroke patients. 🧡 To review Vivistim safety information, tap here: https://qrcodes.pro/vbdPY7. #nationalphysicaltherapymonth #physicaltherapymonth #ptmonth #pt #physicaltherapy #stroketherapy #strokept #strokerecovery #strokerehab

Our long-term follow-up study examined whether a long-term home-based intervention using Paired VNS Therapy is feasible and whether the benefits of Paired VNS therapy are maintained beyond 1 year. Here's how the intervention was designed: ⚙️ Participants were implanted with a VNS device ⚙️ 6 weeks of in-clinic therapy with vagus nerve stimulation paired with goal-oriented tasks ⚙️ Home-based rehabilitation with 30-minutes of vagus nerve stimulation activated by swiping a magnet ⚙️ In-clinic and at-home rehabilitation continued for 90 days 🔎 The findings demonstrate that the significant effects of Paired VNS Therapy at the first year were maintained at years 2 and 3, and further improvements in both impairment and function were observed in years 2 and 3. These changes were associated with improvements in measures of activity and participation. You can see the change in improvements on the Fugl-Meyer Assessment for Upper Extremity (FMA-UE) and Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT) by accessing the article in our bibliography. Kay Wing, PT, DPT, NCS, was in high school when her grandfather survived a stroke. He never fully recovered. A nudging feeling that more could’ve been done for her grandfather to regain function guided Kay Wing throughout her career and led her to specializing in neurological physical therapy. She discusses her passion and inspiration as a physical therapist in this blog and also discusses how new technology that makes stroke therapy more effective reinvigorates her. Neurologists now have an FDA-approved, clinically proven intervention they can recommend to ischemic stroke survivors during the chronic phase of recovery. Vivistim pairs vagus nerve stimulation with high-repetition, task-specific occupational or physical therapy to help stroke survivors regain 2-3 times more upper extremity function than traditional stroke rehabilitation alone.
