Wales in North America

It was really good to see Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. Newport Wafer Fab and the mid-refit #Centre7 on a flying visit to south Wales. 💿 Much of my posting has been spent promoting Wales’ compound semiconductor cluster. A key cornerstone of the cluster is the Fab that’s been here since the 1980s. It was recently purchased by Pennsylvania HQ’d #Vishay for $177m. 🙌 With thanks to SAM EVANS and his amazing team I finally got to see what the Fab was all about. It’s a HUGE facility at 2️⃣8️⃣ acres and is the UK’s biggest semiconductor fab. It produces 30,000 wafers each month and provides great, skilled, well-paid jobs for the local community that pay significantly above the average for the area. 👨🏫 Through support from Llywodraeth Cymru Economi | Welsh Government Economy and the company, some of those working at the site have gone on to earn degrees. What’s great is that the company do outreach work to inspire the next generation of engineers and technicians to come into the industry (this week promoting the fab at the National #Eisteddfod). ⚡️It was really interesting to learn about the plans for the site and how this corner of Wales will help the world in e-mobility, sustainability, and connectivity. 🌎 As always it was also fun to hear of the #softpower connections! Vishay’s corporate HQ is close to #Brynmawr, PA and their new fab in Wales is not far from the original #Brynmawr in Blaenau Gwent. There’s also a strong #Swansea link to the American side of the company – with some being born in Swansea or studied at Swansea University. CENTRE 7 📈 Down the road from the fab is Centre 7. A new facility bought by the Welsh Govermment / Llywodraeth that will enable semiconductor related companies / organisations from across the world to locate into the cluster – next to some of the biggest players in the industry. 🔬 Centre 7 is currently being fitted out with a mix of ‘lab rooms’ and office space. 🇺🇸 US HQ'd MicroLink Devices UK Ltd have already announced that they’ll be re-locating to Centre 7. Another organisation has taken out a lease on another unit with another US company likely to take one of the bigger units. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 If you’re in the #semiconductor world and are looking for a fantastic place, in the centre of the action to locate to – get in touch. Wonderful to be able to visit Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru - Europe's largest cultural festival for the first time since the pandemic which this year came to #Pontypridd 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🎪 🤯 The #Eisteddfod is often described as a 'glorious Welsh gathering' and stems from 1176. ✈️ It's a week long travelling festival that goes between north and south #Wales each year taking over a field, a square or in this case a park (though some have been held in England and once had a bid from Chicago to host it!). 🥣 By now it's a real mix of tradition. It's a multidimensional event celebrating contemporary Wales and upholding historical convention. The Welsh language, #Cymraeg is as its heart. 🎵 It's easier to list what isn't at the National Eisteddfod than what is. You have contemporary artists playing on the outdoor stage, choirs in the main pavillion, #gigs for young people in other fields, a #folk tent, #poetry competitions, Welsh learner competitions, e-sport competitions, #circus perfomers, kids village... 🔬...there's a #science village, #artist competitions and rows ond rows of tents from organisations like universities to the government to shops! 🇺🇸 This year it was great to see Wales' semiconductor cluster being at the heart of the action. KLA were sponsors of the Eisteddfod and Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. had their own booth where people could speak to some of their engineers and inspire the next generation. Raising the profile of this sector to a new generation is so important because of the massive opportunities the sector has in this part of Wales. 👑 Despite the variety at the Festival, central to it all is tradition. One of the oldest and most colourful is "Gorsedd Cymru" which is lead by an Archdruid. You might not believe it, but this is something the USA and Wales have in common. They say great minds work alike, and it seems the same can be said for great cheese makers. In the heart of Snowdonia, the Snowdonia Cheese Company has been maturing cave-aged Cheddar in former slate mines. Meanwhile, across the pond in the USA, hundreds of thousands of pounds of American cheese are stored in converted limestone mines in Missouri. With over 226 million kilos of cheese, the US might need a few more bottles of wine for their cheese board! So, whether you’re in the rolling hills of Wales or the vast landscapes of America, remember to raise a glass (or a slice of cheese) this #NationalCheeseAndWineDay 🍷🧀.

Today the Welsh Government / Llywodraeth published a new approach to Trade Policy 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🌎   The new Trade Policy in Wales needs to achieve 3️⃣ core ambitions: 🗺️ to raise Wales’ profile on the international stage 📈 to grow Wales' economy by increasing exports and attracting inward investment 🌿 to establish Wales as a globally responsible nation

House of the Dragon - Creating opportunities in North Wales | Creu cyfleoedd yng Ngogledd Cymru 📽️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 HBO chose various locations across North Wales to film iconic scenes for the new season of house of the dragon and in turn created several opportunities for people in the local area to gain experience of working on the set of a major production. Happy Independence Day USA! 🎆 You’ve heard of Welcome to Wrexham (Diolch/Thank you Rob and Ryan), but did you know about these other connections between #Wales and the #USA? 🚢 The USA is Wales’ #1 export market. ✈ Cincinnati-based GE Aerospace is one of Wales’ biggest employers. 🔬 KLA, a global leader in advanced wafer processing solutions, has had its SPTS division's R&D and manufacturing arm in Newport for over 40 years. 🏢 Around 320 US HQ’d companies operate in Wales, employing just under 49,000 people. 📈 USA is Wales’ #1 inward investor. ⚽ The Football Association of Wales (FAW) is exporting coaching services to the USA. 👩✈️ Amelia Earhart, the pioneering aviator and first woman to complete a trans-Atlantic flight, landed in Pwll, Wales. 📍 There are at least 10 towns and cities named Cardiff in the USA. 📝 At least 5 signatories of the Declaration of Independence and at least 8 US Presidents had Welsh ancestry.
