Water and wastewater treatment includes the physical, chemical, and biological processes used to improve the quality of the water before discharge. Since the Clean Water Act was issued in 1972, there are more than 16,000 publicly owned wastewater treatment plants in operation in the United States performing water and wastewater treatment and the Water Environment Federation actively supports education, training, policy and technology discussions and actions to promote their critical work. WEF and its members lead various technical work and programs such as the ReNEW Water Project, Utility of the Future, NutrientSmart and more which all aim to promote and advance water and wastewater treatment.
