Originally a tool for materials scientists, the development of FIB for cryogenic samples has opened new discovery channels for cell biologists. This technology is enabling cryo-tomography, a new approach in spatial studies of structures at molecular resolution for a better understanding of cellular proteins and organelles, host-pathogen interactions, neural synapses and more. In addition, the use of cryo-FIB in volume electron microscopy is enabling imaging of vitreous samples – instead of resin-embedded samples - for imaging native structures in cells to model organisms to tissues.
