Groundwater depletion is a significant challenge in #India, impacting agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods: https://lnkd.in/d4uBG7nu In a new working paper, A. Patrick Behrer and Hemant Kumar Pullabhotla explore the effects of constructing surface water infrastructure through the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) on groundwater levels and crop irrigation. The study finds MNREGA has been effective in increasing groundwater levels, which has enabled farmers to expand irrigated areas and shift to higher-value crops, and greater overall irrigation during the dry season. 🔎 Read more: https://lnkd.in/d4uBG7nu

Progress on poverty reduction has stalled. Almost 700 million people globally still live on less than $2.15 a day. What will it take to get back on track to #EndPoverty? That's why it's crucial that today, on The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the world focuses not only on eradicating poverty but also reducing inequality and protecting people from climate shocks.. The new Poverty, Prosperity, and Planet Report 2024: Pathways Out of the Polycrisis offers the first post-pandemic assessment of global progress toward ending poverty and boosting shared prosperity on a livable planet. It was my pleasure to moderate an insightful event yesterday, organized by the Labor Global Solutions Group and World Bank Development Economics, where we discussed the role and effectiveness of job training and matching assistance programs. Building from a paper co-authored by Eliana Carranza and David McKenzie, the session underscored the importance of demand-driven training programs that align with labor market needs, the role of both public and private sectors in the effective delivery of training and intermediation services, and the potential of transport subsidies and skill signaling interventions to address spatial and information frictions in labor markets. Special thanks to Mamta Murthi for her opening remarks, emphasizing the centrality of jobs to human dignity and sustainable growth, and to our panelists for their invaluable contributions: Luis Benveniste and Iffath Sharif from The World Bank and Chris McCahan from the IFC - International Finance Corporation. The paper that kicked off the discussion was published in the Journal of Economic Perspectives here: https://lnkd.in/eAjW3eBK
