⚡On October 3, 2024, World Resources Institute and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) announced a strategic partnership to drive progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 7: ensuring affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. 📈Together, we aim to support global efforts to reach the 760 million people lacking electricity and the 2 billion still using polluting fuels for cooking. Access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy is crucial for health, education, and economic growth. The partnership will develop data, tools, and strategic communication to empower developing nations in making data-driven decisions for integrated energy plans. Key initiatives like African Energy Dialogues, Mission Efficiency, Cooling for All, and Cool Coalition will also be a part of this collaboration. ☀️Recently, WRI Africa participated in a consultative meeting on energy with key stakeholders, organized by Kenya’s Council of Governors. The meeting brought important discussions on coordination and scaling of county energy planning and deployment of productive use of #RenewableEnergy technologies at the sub-national level. WRI Africa showcased its interventions in this space, including, among others, use of #GeospatialData and tools like Energy Access Explorer to inform energy planning, as well as development of investment prospectus to direct deployment of financing to implementation of identified opportunities. The team also shared progress in these efforts, addressing implementation challenges and exploring opportunities for collaboration with the Council and other energy sector partners. A key outcome was consensus on the need for increased collaboration with the Council’s Energy Committee on energy planning, including support for developing energy investment prospectuses to support implementation of the County Energy Plans. This partnership is set to accelerate access to affordable, reliable and clean energy for rural communities and drive sustainable development across Kenya’s counties. 📷Photo credit: Council of Governors,Kenya Benson I., David Njugi, Victor Otieno, Anderson Ngowa

⚡Africa’s renewable energy potential goes beyond reducing carbon emissions—it has the power to transform sectors like agriculture and improve livelihoods. However, financing remains a critical barrier to scaling Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE) solutions, especially for rural communities and smallholder farmers. 📄New research from WRI Africa shows that local banks are uniquely positioned to help scale up PURE. Read our insights article to discover how unlocking local private capital could pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future for Africa👉 https://bit.ly/3N0aFZt Benson I., XIXI CHEN, Anderson Ngowa

WRI is excited to announce the launch of #EnergyReady, a new US Department of Energy funded initiative that integrates a collection of prestigious designation programs for local governments, including #SolSmart, Charging Smart, and the forthcoming Distributed Wind Smart. These programs offer free technical assistance to local governments, helping them implement criteria that reduce unintended barriers to #CleanEnergy development. Communities that earn one of these designations also benefit from national recognition of their efforts to unlock community benefits from these local energy technologies. WRI's US Energy team is thrilled to be a supporting partner. Learn more at www.Energy-Ready.org

🌇⚡ The #EnergyPermittingReformAct (EPRA)—a bill that recently passed out of the US Energy and Natural Resources committee with strong bipartisan support—contains critical provisions that would expand and upgrade the nation’s grid. Its key provisions include a requirement for interregional transmission planning, processes to streamline transmission siting approval, and a mandate to make it easier to implement grid-enhancing technologies. This would all make it substantially easier to plan, permit and pay for long-distance transmission. Read here to learn more about these critical transmission provisions in an article for PV Tech by WRI’s Lori Bird & Joe Hack ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eXVg6AFf

Global Director, Energy Program at World Resources Institute

Ed Milliband tonight at #NYclimateweek was spectacular speaking to Sequoia Foundation. - won election on agenda of speed decarb: Energy security, jobs and growth. Clean energy won. - Milliband - from a former mining constituency. 2016 voted 72% for brexit. Not immigration, not anti-Europe - about jobs. Populist right will win hearts and minds unless we demonstrates jobs. - energy security requires a clean superpowered national economy. Only climate security with global action - avoid “do as we say, not as we do.” - high level “1.5 degrees” narrative doesn’t show how far off track we are in economic change. - Different movement than 15 years ago. We are looking for better lives today - for our people today AND future generations. Such a great vision. #Climateactioninspiration @WRIENERGY
