Mumbai rains LIVE Updates: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange alert for isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra today, July 26. The Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai has issued a yellow alert for the financial capital and Palghar today. In addition to this, an orange alert has been issued in Thane, Sindhudurg, Pune and Kolhapur. Meanwhile, Satara, Raigad and Ratnagiri are on red alert today. 

The RMC said, “Heavy to very heavy rainfall in city and suburbs. Possibility of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. Occassional gusty winds reaching 60-70 kmph very likely."

The IMD issued a nowcast warning at 7:00 am suggesting “moderate spells of rain" at isolated places during the next 3-4 hours. Palghar, Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri, Mumbai districts and ghat areas of Pune and Satara will feel the impact of the predicted downpours

In an update shared by BMC, it said that Tansa Lake, one of the lake supplying water to the Mumbai, started overflowing at around 4:16 PM on Thursday. Three gates of the Tansa Dam were opened to release water at a rate of 3,315 cusecs. The full storage capacity of Tansa Lake is 14,508 crore liters.

Mumbai Rains LIVE: BMC declares schools, colleges to operate normally today

In a sigh of relief amid heavy downpours, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation declared that all the schools and colleges in its area will operate normally on Friday.

Taking to X, the BMC said that the weather and rainfall in Mumbai are normal at present, allowing life in the metropolitan city to proceed smoothly.

"As a result, all schools and colleges in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) area will remain open regularly tomorrow, Friday, 26th July 2024. Parents are humbly requested not to believe any other information or rumours regarding school and college holidays and to rely only on official information from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation," it said.

Mumbai Rains LIVE: Mumbai University on Friday postponed all the exams in the Raigad and Ratnagiri districts amid heavy rain alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Mumbai University's Director of Examination and Evaluation Board, Pooja Roudale announced the postponement.

 The Mumbai University in a post on X stated, "In view of the declared holiday due to heavy rains in Raigad and Ratnagiri districts, keeping in mind the interest of the students and to avoid possible inconvenience, all the examinations to be held today (Friday) on 26th July 2024 in the morning and afternoon session only in these districts have been postponed."

Mumbai Rains LIVE: On Thursday, around eleven flights were cancelled and ten diverted after heavy rains reduced visibility significantly. Operations at the Mumbai airport ware halted twice after runway visibility dropped to 300 metres. 

An airport source said, "Runway operations were first halted for 11 minutes from 8.32 am to 8.43 am, and then again for 19 minutes from 10.36 am to 10.55 am due to adverse weather and low visibility, which dropped to 300 meters and Runway Visual Range (RVR) at 500 meters with heavy rains," reported PTI.

Mumbai Rains LIVE: 14 crew members rescued after maritime vessel ran aground off Raigad's Kolaba Fort

The Indian Coast Guard on Friday successfully rescued 14 crew members after severe weather conditions caused a JSW maritime vessel with 14 crew on board, to run aground off Raigad's Kolaba Fort yesterday.

According to the Indian Coast Guard release in the early hours of Friday, despite adverse conditions limiting air operations, ICG launched a daring operation to evacuate the crew from the stranded vessel.

"At 1327 h on July 25, Indian Coast Guard ship Sankalp on Patrol and Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, Mumbai, received a distress call from JSW Raigad, a 121.6 m long bulk carrier with 14 Indian crew anchored off Alibag. The vessel reported anchor dragging and loss of control. This was further worsened by flooding in the engine room. In turbulent sea conditions, the vessel ran aground on reefs, 01 Nm from Alibag. Given the extreme sea conditions of the Maharashtra coast and the reefs in the area, airlift was the only option left," ICG stated.

Mumbai Rains LIVE: Heavy rainfall led to widespread flooding and necessitated rescue operations in Ambernath and some other areas of Thane district on Thursday. 

In Ambernath, 18 elderly residents of Sahavas old age home were relocated to upper floors at another old age home in Maher. Similarly, 30 children and staff from Satkarma ashram were rescued and shifted to Pragati Andha Vidyalaya. As many as 200 persons were evacuated to BSUP building. In Kalyan, 40 families, comprising 156 persons, were relocated as a precautionary measure.
