Fox owned companies share the half mechanical/half hydraulic design
Easton and Race Face have released a nearly identical dropper seat post this morning. Let’s take a closer look.
Key Points
- Fox owned companies release a nearly identical dropper post
- Uses a mix of mechanical and hydraulic parts
- Cable-operated remote is internally routed
- Weight of 495 grams
- Will be released in November and cost £349
So, how come two companies are releasing the same product?
Well, it’s not exactly the same product, the two droppers will have different levers, but other than that, the posts themselves are the same. Race Face has called it the Turbine and Easton has called it the Haven.
They are able to do this because they are both owned by Fox so there isn’t really any conflict of interest.
>>> Is this the simplest dropper post ever?
But doesn’t Fox already make a dropper post?
Yeah, Fox has the D.O.S.S (Drop On Steep Stuff) post, but this new post seems to be a significant upgrade on that. The D.O.S.S is a three position seatpost, where as this one can be ran anywhere in its travel.
This one also weighs less and has internal routing, making it a much neater and more integrated part of your bike than the dated Fox design.
So how does it work?
The post uses a mix of hydraulic and mechanical systems. It’s a bit like a disc brake – the hydraulic system controls the damping and rebound and then a mechanical system locks the seat in place.
Race Face believes that this means the seat can be run at lower pressures making for more controlled adjustments and a hardier seatpost. The seatpost has been shown to work in below freezing temperatures making it ideal for our forthcoming winter or even fat biking!
What else is there to know?
The dropper post is internally routed, similar to a Reverb Stealth, which means there’s no ugly cable trailing up to your saddle. The post will come with an ambidextrous black lever but you can bling this up if you’re willing to drop another £50 for an upgarde.
The post weighs 495 grams (as opposed to over 500 for the D.O.S.S). It is available in 30.9 or 31.6mm diameters; 350, 375, 415 or 440mm lengths and 100, 125 or 150mm travel – basically, Race Face and Easton have all the bases covered.
The post will cost £349 and will be available in November.
