According to IDC data, global smartphone shipments grew by 6.5%, while Counterpoint Research data showed that consumer sales grew by 6%.
The significant discounts during China's 618 shopping festival helped attract consumers from China, the world's largest smartphone market, with manufacturers including Huawei leading the market this year. This new research supplements data from Chinese government agencies, which shows that iPhone demand has been recovering since March.
IDC said Apple shipped 45.2 million phones in the quarter, up 1.5% year over year. However, Counterpoint's data show that sales to end users fell by 1%, and both research institutions found that the iPhone is losing market share.
The iPhone has been under pressure from local manufacturers in China. Discounts and promises of new AI-enhanced features helped Apple and market leader Samsung Electronics (SSNLF.US) stabilize sales, with Samsung also promoting new AI-added phones.
Nabila Popal, research director at IDC, said: "Apple's growth momentum in the second quarter has improved significantly from the negative growth in the first quarter. This is partly due to large discounts and promotional activities in many regions, but also thanks to Apple finally announcing its AI strategy after WWDC, which has boosted customer confidence."
