What is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition about?

Each game is a separate story that takes place in a unique and diverse open world. Players can decide if they want to move through the story, take side missions, or just cruise around the game environment, finding new ways to experience and explore each world — all while doing whatever you want.

Below, you’ll find a quick refresher on each game in case it’s been a while since your last six-star wanted status.

Grand Theft Auto III

Where: Liberty City
Most of the action takes place in the three boroughs of fictional Liberty City: Portland, Staunton Island, and Shoreside Vale.
When: 2001
Lead Character: Claude

In the 2001 crime epic that defined open-world games for a generation, you play as Claude, the silent protagonist who has to make his way through the Liberty City criminal underworld after he was betrayed and shot by his girlfriend during a bank heist gone wrong.

Surrounded by a wild cast of characters, players can dive into the darkly comedic world of organized crime, taking on a rich variety of gangs all in pursuit of Claude’s vengeance against his ex and the cartel she now leads.

Grand Theft Auto III’s open-world gameplay will have you chasing fortune and glory while cruising through the streets blasting the radio dial that pioneered it all.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Where: Vice City
Players can explore two main fictional islands, Vice City and Vice City Beach.
When: 1986
Lead Character: Tommy Vercetti

Welcome back to the ’80s. Welcome to Vice City.

In the next entry in the series, first released in 2002, you take on the role of mobster Tommy Vercetti (voiced by Ray Liotta), as he rises to the top of the criminal underworld following his release from prison. After a drug deal goes bad, Tommy must recover the stolen merchandise and money for his boss, lest he suffer more permanent consequences.

As Tommy, players roam Vice City, taking on biker gangs, drug lords, and even assist some glam-metal rockers. Tom Sizemore, Luis Guzmán, and Burt Reynolds join the wild cast of characters Tommy works with (and against) as he attempts to establish his own criminal empire and take control of the Vice City underworld.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Where: San Andreas
When: 1992
Players can explore the fictional Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas.
Lead Character: Carl “CJ” Johnson

Five years after leaving Los Santos to pursue a better life away from the gangs, drugs, and corruption, Carl “CJ” Johnson (voiced by Young Maylay) has returned to the old neighborhood. He’s come back to attend his mother’s funeral after she was killed in a drive-by shooting. But after two corrupt cops threaten to frame him for murder, CJ must stick around to clear his name and save the surviving members of his family.

The stellar voice cast features Ice-T joining the GTA series as rapper Madd Dogg, while Samuel L. Jackson brings his distinctive energy to corrupt officer Frank Tenpenny. Keep an eye out for previous GTA characters — you never know who you’ll run into on the streets of San Andreas.

What’s different about Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition when playing on Netflix?

Nothing. Everything is exactly as if you’re on your older sibling’s PlayStation 2 — only now with upgrades for modern consoles.

Do the games still have the same soundtrack?

You better believe it.
