About this mod

Adds some new standalone heads for masc Gnome, Halfling, and Dwarf. Includes support for Unique Tav.

⫸ Why / About:

Mod consists of one main file (Heads for the Short Lads), plus an optional patch:


If using Eyes of the Beholder, compatibility is included from their side.

On request also available as loose file replacers. They will replace masc gnome heads 3 and 4, halfling heads 3, 5 and 6, and dwarf head 5. NPCs with those heads will now be affected. Has no LODs so fair warning regarding performance regarding areas with a lot of NPCs.

Make sure Animation Level of Detail is set to high in all cases or you'll probably get floaty heads.



⫸ What:

2x Body Type 2 Gnomes (technically 4 including the "no 5 o clock shadow" alt versions)
3x Body Type 2 Halflings
1x Body Type 2 Dwarf



⫸ Installation Instructions:

Standalone version (recommended):

  •  Download the main file. If you use Unique Tav/Kaz Virtual Tav there is an optional patch to download in addition.
  •  Unzip the downloaded file(s) and place the main file (+ any optional patch) into your game's Mods folder:
    ..\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mod
  •  Use BG3 Mod Manager and move mod(s) from Inactive over to Active Mods. Patches should go below/after the main file. Save load order and then Export to game.
  •  In CC you should now see some new icons appear for the respective BT2 races.



To update mod just overwrite the .pak in your Mods folder.
        To change between standard and Unique Tav version remember to take the other one out of the folder. Can do this mid-playthrough.
        To uninstall just delete from mods folder or simply deactivate in MM.



Loose files (replacers for default heads):

FAIR WARNING for loose file usage: head mods with custom skeletons, when loaded loose like this, can potentially have some animation oddness in cutscenes due to coding overrides I no longer have control over.

  •  Unzip the downloaded file, open it.
  •  Drag and drop the Data folder into your game's base directory so that it merges with the already present "Data" folder.
    (e.g. the default with Steam is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Baldurs Gate 3 )
  •  If you are prompted to Replace, do so. Everything should automatically go into place. Done!


To uninstall the Halfling heads follow these paths:
  • Heads: ..\Data\Generated\Public\Shared\Assets\Characters\_Anims\Halflings\_Male\Resources -> 3 gr2 files
  • Armatures: ..\Data\Public\Shared\Assets\Characters\_Anims\Halflings\_Male -> 3 gr2 files
  • Textures(1): ..\Data\Generated\Public\Shared\Assets\Characters\_Models\Halflings\HFL_M_NKD\HFL_M_NKD_Head_C\Resources -> 3 dds files
  • Textures(2): ..\Data\Generated\Public\Shared\Assets\Characters\_Models\Halflings\HFL_M_NKD\HFL_M_NKD_Head_F\Resources -> 3 dds files
  • Textures(3): ..\Data\Generated\Public\Shared\Assets\Characters\_Models\Halflings\HFL_M_NKD\HFL_M_NKD_Head_E\Resources -> 3 dds files
To uninstall the Gnome heads follow these paths:
  • Head: ..\Data\Generated\Public\Shared\Assets\Characters\_Anims\Gnomes\_Male\Resources -> 2 gr2 files
  • Armature: ..\Data\Public\Shared\Assets\Characters\_Anims\Gnomes\_Male -> 2 gr2 files
  • Textures(1): ..\Data\Generated\Public\Shared\Assets\Characters\_Models\Gnomes\GNO_M_NKD\GNO_M_NKD_Head_C\Resources -> 4 dds files
  • Textures(2): ..\Data\Generated\Public\Shared\Assets\Characters\_Models\Gnomes\GNO_M_NKD\GNO_M_Head_D\Resources -> 4 dds files
To uninstall the Dwarf head follow these paths:
  • Head: ..\Data\Generated\Public\Shared\Assets\Characters\_Anims\Dwarves\_Male\Resources -> 1 gr2 file
  • Armature: ..\Data\Public\Shared\Assets\Characters\_Anims\Dwarves\_Male -> 1 gr2 file
  • Textures: ..\Data\Generated\Public\Shared\Assets\Characters\_Models\Dwarves\DWR_M_NKD\DWR_M_NKD_Head_E\Resources -> 3 dds files

To uninstall loose versions, follow the above paths and delete the relevant files.




⫸ Notes / Issues:

  • There is a persistent neck seam on the halflings which appears on the vanilla heads as well. Because of that I'm unsure it's fixable (John Larian surely would have done so then, right? ...). So far fixing normals does a bit but not perfect, current guess is the body textures.
  • Regarding head VFX: The head VFX (speak with dead, etc) for head mods DO NOT merge, so there will be compatibility issues. Priority in mods folder for this is random. Luckily, Padme has been working on/released a community patch. If you install this you should be able to have all the VFX-ready head mods installed without these conflicts.
