Who sez that Raiders ain't smart?

Yeah, they like booze and jet and caps and killing people. And chopping people up one bit at a time. And skinning people alive. And "iguana meat" - gotta have that iguana meat. Fresh is best.

They like their guns. They like their knives. Especially, they like their knives - they practice on victims with them a lot. Some of them even have special knives that punch through armor and make people bleed a lot more.

Raider knives, a modification of ordinary switchblades and combat knives and machetes. Hammered and filed into shape by a half-stoned and half-drunk raider.

These are those knives.

Raider Blades.

Updated to NextGen. Recompiled scripts and repacked everything into new ba2 archives. DEFINITELY fixed the loadscreen art!

What this does:

Adds a little color to the raiders in your game - in the form of special craftable weapon mods that will very rarely appear on switchblades, combat knives, and machetes carried by raiders. These craftable weapon mods:

* punch through armor
* inflict extra base damage
* cause extra bleeding damage

These weapon mods don't appear that often in the game - perhaps on 1 in 50 raiders with melee weapons, if the Sole Survivor is high enough level:

L15 - Switchblade
L20 - Combat Knife
L25 - Machete

Craftable?

Yes - if you have the "Raider Blades" perk, from the Raider Blades magazines which have been placed in the game. So long as you have 1 rank in the Raider Blades perk (and enough ranks in Blacksmith) you can modify a switchblade/combat knife/machete into a Raider Blade.

Raider Blades Magazines?

Yes - Raiders ain't big-time literate, but they can write and draw pictures. Pictures of how'n'where to stick holes in people, and pictures of how to shape blades. There are five Raider-drawn magazines placed across the Commonwealth, created by known raiders. Each of these magazines gives +2 damage when using a weapon with the Raider Blade modification (maximum of +10 extra damage).

Where are they?

Spoiler:
Show
* A shack in the wilderness southwest of Vault 111 (or follow the power pylons northwest from Abernathy - turn right at the third pylon)
* The buried trailer/bunker north of Fort Hagen, northwest of Relay Tower 0BB-915 (follow the Raider Radio Signal advertising chems)
* Roadside Pines Motel
* The rooftops between Gwinnet Restaurant and The Castle
* At Eleanor's place northwest of Fairline Hills Estates

Is that all?

No. There's also a legendary Raider Blade switchblade placed out there.

Spoiler:
Show
It's called Icepick and is at the bottom of Thicket Excavations, behind the final hut.

I made this to give a little extra color and depth to Raiders, and I thought that tying them to melee weapons would be not too overpowering. Melee players might find the things interesting also.

Mostly though, it let me learn how to: make a custom perk, make custom magazines, make custom weapon mods (playing around with Blender), add custom weapon mods into the game, and make a custom legendary weapon. A bit of learning fun for me.

Notes:

There's no animated stuff for the magazines and the perk, like there is for the Grognak and Tesla and etc magazines. My skills don't extend to .swf files.

If you are using LOOT Detector then the magazines and the custom legendary will show up if you are within range.

If you find a mistake with this mod, let me know in the bugs section. It'll take me a while to notice and fix it - life is busy and I have no plans to make this mod do anything more.

Update/Fixes:

1.2:
* Better cover art (MUCH better cover art!)
** Each cover has unique art - including slightly different wear-and-tear marks
** Hopefully I've fixed the Loadscreen image so that it appears vertically (hard to tell, it doesn't proc often)
* Blades now do (stacking) bleed damage depending upon their size:
** Switchblade - 1 bleed/second for 5 seconds
** Combat Knife - 2 bleed/second for 5 seconds
** Machete - 3 bleed/second for 5 seconds
* Bleed effect is now silent and no longer alarms all and sundry (thank Spacefiddle for finding that one!)

1.1:
* Fixed respawn problem - you won't be getting duplicate magazines any more
* Fixed display problem - now displays properly when read/inspected from the inventory

Is it safe to update this? Yes. No meshes or material/glow files have been changed.

F.A.Q.

Q: Your mod broke my game! Help me fix it!
A: Uninstall the mod and revert to an earlier game save.

Q: The Combat Knife version looks a bit weird.
A: Yeah, I had artistic issues with it. Especially around the clip-point of the blade - the whole thing looked really weird when I made it longer than it is.  Even so, the blade is slightly longer than the normal Combat Knife blade and the serrations extend quite far. If it was a real knife it'd go in deep and the extended serrations would make some really bad exit wounds and likely pull half your guts out with them. Not nice stuff - exactly what raiders'd use.

Q: That Raider Blade mod for the Combat Knife makes it better than Pickman's Blade!
A: Wrong. Pickman's Blade has two things going for it - the stealth blade (extra damage with sneak attacks) and the legendary Wounding effect (total extra 25 damage). That doesn't mean you can't put a Raider Blade mod onto Pickman's Blade. It just doesn't have the stealthy sneak-attack bonus once you do that - you might prefer that to the slightly extra damage from the Raider Blade mod.

Q: It doesn't work right with <favorite sorting mod>?
A: I made some effort to do that - and finally ditched it. You want to make a patch, feel free. Otherwise manually rename it in your weapons workbench.

Q: Can I have a glowing Icepick?
A: Yes. Manually download the optional file - extract it - create the folder "<FO4Data>/Materials/whisperRaiderBlades/" - copy in there the appropriate color .BGSM file that you want - rename it to "Icepick.BGSM". Voila! Note that "superbright" is relative, it's not a lightsaber that's going to illuminate the entire room. (My personal preference is for the low-key white version. It's subtle.)

Q: Can I make my own glowing color for Icepick?
A: Go for it. It's just a .BGSM file - open it with the Material Editor, go to the middle tab (as per the picture on the Material Editor page), change the Emittance Color and Emittance Multiplier to whatever you like. I don't think that values greater than 1.0000 actually make things brighter.
