The Webley-Fosbery was developed in the late 1890s by Lt. Col. George Fosbery, an officer of the British Army and recipient of the Victoria Cross. The guns went through several iterations after production began in 1901, but the mechanical principle behind the guns remained the same. The Fosbery's unique action utilises the top half of a Webley service revolver fitted onto a custom-made lower receiver. The entire top half of the gun rides in a groove on the top of the lower receiver, which allows the recoil of the gun to push the top half rearwards. The hammer is automatically re-cocked on the rearward stroke by a fixed cam, and the cylinder is rotated 60 degrees per cycle by a stationary peg and a series of grooves on the cylinder. The operation of the Fosbery inspired the even stranger system of the Pancor Jackhammer, which unfortunately never made it past the prototype stage. The Webley-Fosbery's design varied slightly over its production life, as different models of the Webley service revolver were used to make the top half, but the principle of operation remained the same.
The Fosbery was known for being very accurate and smooth, as every shot is effectively a single-action revolver trigger pull. As such, it has a low spread and can be fired reasonably fast in-game. The gun was designed as a compromise between early semi-automatics and revolvers, possessing the speed and smoothness of an automatic with the reliability of a revolver. During the Great War, many British military officers purchased Fosberies to satisfy the requirement of having a sidearm in calibre .455 whilst retaining a technological advantage. However, the guns quickly became obsolete as automatic pistols became cheaper and more reliable.
The original Fosberies used .455 Webley ammunition, which is similar enough to .45 ACP that my mod version uses the .45 ammo. Variants were also produced in caliber .38 ACP, which held 8 shots instead of 6, but these examples are rare.
The Fosbery has been featured in a number of movies and video games. It appeared in Battlefield 1 as the "Autorevolver", and was used by Sean Connery in the 1974 sci-fi film "Zardoz". I highly discourage you from watching that film, unless you want to be permanently haunted by the image of Mr. Connery in a speedo. Yikes.
