Nathan Delaney was a former scout in the United States Army during the Resource Wars, serving in Alaska until his squad mysteriously disappeared. He was honorably discharged and was given a space in Vault 111 as compensation. From then on until the day the bombs dropped, he worked as a construction foreman building structures using the newly made RobCo Atomic Nano Construction Bots.

On the day the bombs dropped, he and his family safely made it inside. However, his wife Emily was critically injured and his son was taken from him. If it wasn't for the cryo-stasis pods she would have died. After reuniting with her and setting out to find their son, they encountered Preston Garvey, who gave them purpose and a way to start to rebuild America. In truth, the America Nathan knew had died in 2066 when the Chinese invaded Alaska, and he had realized that the Minutemen were a way to rebuild the America he wanted, and also to try to find his son.

For the next year, Nathan and his wife wandered the Commonwealth, helping the needy and vanquishing the evils that plagued them. They amassed a group of friends, known later as Freedom Company, and waged war on the numerous Raiders, Gunners, and Super Mutants. After the Castle was retaken, the people of the Commonwealth knew the Minutemen were back, and this time for good. Settlements were established, bringing in old-world luxuries such as sanitation, clean clothes, and endless purified water. Mass production of crops, weapons, armor and clothing rebuilt the fledgling economy and turned the Minutemen into the most powerful faction on the surface of the Commonwealth. Working with a group of Ex-Brotherhood members known as the Brotherhood of Gold, they established a teleportation system and started to rebuild much of the infrastructure in the Commonwealth.

But still, there was no information on their captured infant son. That was, until the General and his wife found out about a mercenary named Kellogg from an Ex-Minutemen named Murphy. Kellogg was the one who had shot Nathan's wife and took his son. After reading his holotape diary, however, he learned that Kellogg had persuaded the Institute not to harvest Shaun's DNA and instead spare him. The General fought his way into Kellogg's base and offered him a deal - help him infiltrate the Institute and he wouldn't kill him. Kellogg agreed and they began to formulate a plan to infiltrate the Institute.

They didn't have long, however, as the corrupt Brotherhood of Steel arrived in the Commonwealth. The two Brotherhoods fought a civil war, resulting in Maxson stepping down as Elder and Sarah Lyons returned to lead the Brotherhood. While this was going on, a rogue institute scientist contacted the General and laid out a plan to reform the institute and remove the corrupt scientists that were responsible for the wrongdoings of the Institute. With the Institute reformed to be far more ethical, the Railroad disbanded, its purpose fulfilled. This became known as the Minuteman Revolution. Immediately after the Minuteman Revolution, the General learned that his son was alive and none other than the leader of the old Institute - Father - and was suffering from a crippling cancer. The General moved mountains and found a cure for his son, although he kept it a secret, knowing how the rest of the commonwealth would most likely feel about it.

During the Civil War, however, the General learned a fact that shook him to his core - that Preston Garvey was in fact an Enclave Agent, meant to destabilize the Minutemen and turn it into a proxy army for the Enclave. Enraged and disheartened, he confronted Garvey, but let him live, hoping he would change. This would prove a mistake, as during the the height of the Civil War, Preston escaped to Nuka World, along with the few remaining leaders of the Gunners and raider gangs. The General resolved to wipe the slate clean - he would oversee the destruction and removal of all those in leadership of the four main factions. Corruption would be eliminated, and all traces of enclave-related infighting would be removed. During this time, his Minutemen secured Diamond City and Goodneighbor, while destroying all major Gunner and Raider bases.

When the dust had cleared and the Commonwealth was saved, the General's Minutemen, the Reformed Institute, the Brotherhood of Gold, and the remnants of the Railroad formed an Alliance - the Grand Coaltion - and began to rebuild the Commonwealth. The allied settlements under the Minutemen signed a constitution and formed the New England Republic, and the rule of law was restored to the wastes. Each settlement was given representation in the High Senate, and elections were held. The first president was the General's Wife, Emily Delaney, in an almost historic unanimous vote, with only two settlements voting against her.

To take on the last of the Enclave, Raiders, and Gunners hiding out in Nuka-World, the Grand Coalition would need allies. They looked to Far Harbor, Acadia, the Children of Atom, and the Mechanist. They mustered their forces and stormed Nuka-World, destroying the remaining opposition and taking many leaders alive to be taken to trial. Here the Nuka-World trials were held, and the major leaders of the various old factions were held accountable to their crimes. Preston Garvey, the leaders of the Gunners and Raider Gangs, and the corrupt scientists of the Old Institute were executed, while Mayor McDonough and the other upper-stands members who attempted the coup on Diamond City are currently serving a life sentence. Kells was executed during the Civil War, and Henry Casdin is currently fleeing south.

The General, not wanting to hang up his tricorne yet, went on several other adventures and rapidly expanded the territory of the Republic. By 2290, the borders of the Republic were the Mississippi to the West, the Mason Dixon Line to the South, the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River to the North, and the Atlantic Ocean to the East. The Republic had become the most powerful nation in the history of the world since the Great War.
