Overview

Settlers in Far Harbor having lines that are silent, or female settlers talking in a poor quality recording of a male voice? Then this is the fix.

Technical Details

  • All base Far Harbor Female "EncWorkshopNPC" Settlers use the Voice Type FemaleEvenToned [VTYP:00013ADD], as does DLC03WorkshopNPC "Settler" [NPC_:0301054D], which is the base settler type.
  • Better Settlers (admirably) tries to change this up by adding Female Settlers with FemaleRough [VTYP:0000002E], FemaleBoston [VTYP:00023324] and FemaleGhoul [VTYP:00023322] voice types - my working assumption was that these voice types either have placeholder or no dialog for the Far Harbor lines (as the voice types were not assigned to any Far Harbor settlers in the base DLC), resulting in silent or low quality male readings of voice lines.
  • I extracted the .fuz files and used UnFuzer to check a load of them, and found the 'rough' and 'boston' had a lot of either missing, synthesized or placeholder version (recorded by some guy on the dev team I'm guessing) files, presumably used during development until proper dialog was recorded.
Some are specific to certain NPCs, but appear in generic lists, so I'm guessing NPCs were created with generic voice types then had them assigned to individual ones once the work on their lines was done. Seems like a lot of wasted space still including the placeholders to be honest!
  • As such, there's no way around the issue of the missing files whilst still using the voice types for settlers - voice types aren't assigned lines individually or anything, they are just assigned to settler types as a whole.
  • To fix the issue unfortunately I just had to revert all of the voice types to being FemaleEvenToned [VTYP:00013ADD] for the 'DLC03XSettEncWorkshopNPC######' entries in Better Settlers.
  • 3 ESPs have been created, one the base version of better settlers, one for the clean face pack and one for the CCAP.
  • All 3 are ELS-flagged ESPs to prevent load order bloat whilst maximising compatibility in case of future changes to Better Settlers (which is why they aren't replacers).

  • I contacted Thom293 with my findings and he said he was happy for me to upload my fix.

Installation

  • Mod Manager: Install as usual. whichever ESP you use should be loaded after any / all Better Settlers base ESPs (and has them as a master, so unless your mod manager is absolute rubbish it should do so automatically). Personally I use Vortex (took me a while but I'm getting used to it).
  • Manual: extract archive into your Fallout 4\Data folder and add to your load order manually.

Compatibility

Unless you have another mod editing the specific Far Harbor 'settler presets' which Better Settlers adds it shouldn't interfere with anything or vice versa.

Requirements

Better Settlers - obviously. Installation options for BS vary but I have uploaded multiple versions so should be one that fits your needs.

Known Issues

None as of writing - if you find any let me know!
