About this mod

A simple and very lightweight lens flare enhancer to make the sun's lens flare more visible, without altering or brightening the sun itself. Recommended for people who prefer an improved vanilla look.

UPDATE:

Hello again!

This mod got updated so that it now only requires an *.esp file without touching any textures. This was done because some people understandably didn't like the lens flares on other light sources getting affected as well, and I'm in agreement. The previous version looked good on some of the extra light sources, but I discovered several light sources on which it didn't (large explosions during dark nights, for example).

This new version ONLY affects the sun (as originally intended), and avoids me having to recompress textures. It also allows for some more fine-tuning; the viewing angle is now slightly wider with slightly less opacity. I also added a centered glare effect, so that when you look straight into the sun, the entire screen lights up (like in many other games). I personally really like this effect, but there's an optional version available for those who don't.

Installation:
Make sure mods are enabled first, as explained in the following link:

Use your favorite mod manager, or manually drop the *.esp file into your Fallout 4\Data folder. Then enable the mod from the mods menu.

If updating from the previous version, first delete the following files:

...\Fallout 4\Data\Textures\Effects\LensFlares\GlowCircle01_d.dds
...\Fallout 4\Data\Textures\Effects\LensFlares\LensHexShape01_d.dds
...\Fallout 4\Data\Textures\Effects\LensFlares\LensHexShape02_d.dds
...\Fallout 4\Data\Textures\Effects\LensFlares\LensSoftReflectionRound01_d.dds

Not deleting them won't harm anything, but the result won't look as intended. Feel free to also delete the LensFlares folder if it ends up empty after deleting the files.

Uninstallation:
Use your favorite mod manager, or manually disable the mod and remove the file. Completely safe to add, remove, or replace anytime.

Requirements:
Lens flares should be enabled. None otherwise.

Compatibility:
Very good and lenient, but unsure. Should work with most versions of the game, but haven't tested it with the Next-Gen Update. No idea how it interacts with an ENB either, and probably overwrites other mods that alter the sun's lens flare entries, depending on order. Very easy to remove if conflicts arise.

What this mod does:
It makes the sun's lens flare more visible and noticeable.

What this mod does not do:
Unlike other mods, this one doesn't increase initial glare, make the sun brighter, or alter the sun itself, just its lens flare. Has no effect on god rays, and doesn't fix any bugs that are in the original game. Doesn't edit any cells, image spaces, or weathers.

PREVIOUS VERSION:

A bit bothered by the lens flare from the sun being barely visible, undermining that summertime feeling you get from sunny days in movies? Worried that the more advanced weather and sun overhaul mods might change more than you bargained for? Not to worry, as this one will keep things simple.

This mod offers just four small textures: those that make up the lens flare from the sun. The textures themselves were derived from Bethesda's default ones, but tweaked to the perfect pinnacle of my personal preference. I compared them with hundreds of photos and footage of actual lens flares, other mods and my own observations, to get them just right. Subtle, yet undeniably noticeable.

Use your favorite mod manager, or manually drop the contents of the downloaded archive into your Fallout 4 folder. Do NOT overwrite the entire folder, but merge when asked instead. The end result should look something like this:

...\Fallout 4\Data\Textures\Effects\LensFlares\GlowCircle01_d.dds
...\Fallout 4\Data\Textures\Effects\LensFlares\LensHexShape01_d.dds
...\Fallout 4\Data\Textures\Effects\LensFlares\LensHexShape02_d.dds
...\Fallout 4\Data\Textures\Effects\LensFlares\LensSoftReflectionRound01_d.dds

Uninstallation:
Use your favorite mod manager, or manually remove the files and optionally the empty folders that contained them (only if there's nothing else in 'em). Completely safe to add or remove anytime.

What this mod does:
It makes the sun's lens flare more visible and noticeable. Also alters several lens flares from light sources in the game that use the same texture, such as those in Vault 111. This might be an unwanted side effect for some, but I think it looks great, as demonstrated in the screenshots above.

What this mod does not do:
Unlike other mods, this one doesn't increase glare, make the sun brighter, or alter the sun itself, just its lens flare. Has no effect on god rays, and doesn't fix any bugs that are in the original. Also doesn't edit any meshes, cells, image spaces, or weathers.

Requests:
I do requests ... for now. Want the sun's lens flare more or less noticeable, brighter, darker, more colorful, or differently colored altogether? Just ask. I will limit this to just texture edits and will not adjust models/meshes/filters/cells/references/weathers/image spaces, or anything else.

Special Thanks:
- Bethesda, of course. Everybody's got a love-hate relationship with Bethesda.
- KillSwitch072, for the extra screenshot.
- aconvert.com, for allowing me to easily convert from and to the *.dds texture file format online.
- LunaPic and Online PNG Tools, for offering me an easy way to edit images online, without having to refresh my Photoshop license.
