Changelogs
Version 2.0
All mod file versions - main and optional - have been updated to 2.0 for consistency, and compatibility with the Mod Manager updater.
The higher bitrate version of LE3 is now the only supported version going forward
fixed issue where certain cutscenes would have loud screeching audio in LE1, LE2, LE3 and the LE1 Ultrawide Community Mods cutscenes mod
11/7/2023 Removed a few unnecessary files from LE3, no change to version number.
- Removed from LE3 (BASEGAME): End01_Sword_Bad_Pt.bik - Removed from LE3 (DLC_MOD_ALOVUWLE3): proear_intro_Animatic.bik, mscordaccore.dll
Version 1.2.1
LE3: - Priority: Geth Dreadnought - incorrect cutscene when approaching and docking the dreadnought has been replaced. Also available as a standalone download. - Thessia: Temple approach - landing cutscene has been replaced with corrected scaling. Also available as a standalone download.
Version 1.2
LE2: - Re-encoded most cutscenes at a higher bitrate to reduce compression artifacts. Results vary, and are more noticeable in some cutscenes than others. - 4 cutscenes in v1.1 were low quality and have been re-encoded. They are also available as a separate manual download if you don't want the full 1.2 update ( "LE2_manual_replacement_bik")
LE3: - Re-encoded all videos at a higher bitrate to reduce compression artifacts. Results vary, and are more noticeable in some cutscenes than others. Due to the size of the mod, I have made it available as an additional, optional download.
Version 1.1
LE1: - Re-encoded videos for better quality in Bink 2 format (Bring down the Sky, flashbacks, transition cutscenes and more)
LE2: - Re-encoded videos for better quality in Bink 2 format (main loading screen, flashback. - Videos which played in 16:9 - mainly elevator and misc. transitions - now display correctly in 21:9

A Lot Of Videos: Ultrawide [21:9] for Mass Effect Legendary Edition
What does this mod do?
ALOV: Ultrawide is a total conversion of ALOV 4K video footage to a 21:9 aspect ratio - rescaling and reframing everything for a fully immersive, full-screen experience.
Roughly 550videos were reviewed, reframed, exported and compressed - over 500 hours work across 4 months. Development continues, see the Optional Files section to download ultrawide patches for your favorite LE mods (in progress, for a list of other mods which have their own cutscenes please see the Installation: Issues section)
Mass Effect LE is optimised for 16:9 widescreen monitors, meaning pre-rendered and video cutscenes will show black bars on either side on 21:9 displays. Mods can remove these from in-game footage effectively but pre-rendered video footage still shrinks and remains pillar-boxed within the display resolution height -this mod addresses this.
I became involved with the ALOV remastering project team soon after getting a copy of LE. I had recently switched to 21:9 from 4K 16:9, and it had also been several years since I had played the series. I decided to wait until the project was finished to get the most out of the experience, but quickly found the cutscene resize and aspect ratio switching a frustrating distraction. I did a test run scaling and reframing a short flyby scene in the Normandy, and it was the missing link to enjoying the newly remastered game as a seamless, immersive experience.
I am excited and proud to share this experience with you.
How this was done:
Preparation: Importing and Calibrations...
Spoiler:
Show
A new sequence was created for every video in Premiere Pro, naming, setting up the stage size for 3440x1440 and the matching frame rate. The videos were imported and added to each sequence timeline.
Resizing and Repositioning
Spoiler:
Show
Next, the videos were resized to fit the stage size. When converting from a 16: to 21:9 aspect ratio, the middle 75% of the displayed image is cropped, and often needs to be repositioned to keep the important things in the frame. This was done for every newly-scaled video and compared to its original on a shot by shot basis. Videos with several different shots or a lot of camera movement had additional automated keyframe controls to maintain consistency.
For example: When the video below is scaled, nearly all of the central sphere and much of the surrounding ring are out of frame, and the energy build-up is happening at the bottom of the screen.
First the video was moved up the stage during the end of the previous scene transition to bring the sphere in frame. Once the device begins firing, another automation is set up to slowly move the video back down, adjusting the beam position and bringing a little more of the device in frame from the top of the screen.
It's a subtle adjustment, but it keeps the focus areas consistent as the camera moves and shakes.
In-game Remakes
Spoiler:
Show
In a few instances, I was lucky enough to be able to completely recreate the entire video without having to scale, crop or resize, and instead record the video at native 21:9 60fps in-game. These were things like loading screens, a Normandy docking video in LE1 and some cutaway shots in the Citadel DLC. A big thanks to Audemus for sharing the process, and Sil/Tydeous and HenBagle for helping to recreate the shots in-game using Legendary Explorer. A handful of other scenes from LE2 and LE3 have been deferred for future release to bring the initial release date forward.
Post Production
Spoiler:
Show
A fair amount of Post-Production editing was done by Audemus in the 4K ALOV release, correcting errors, oddities, and inconsistencies from the original footage.
The project files were imported from After Effects into its Premiere Pro sequence counterpart. The same source video is referenced in both, so it was easy to copy existing edits to the new footage and then delete the original clip.
Delivery
Spoiler:
Show
Once the video edits were complete they were exported to Apple ProRes 422 HQ video, then encoded into 3440x1440 Bink 2 files using RAD Tools at about 250% of the vanilla bitrate. Thanks to the fact that we were lucky enough to be able to use Bink 2 (which is far more efficient than Bink 1), the total size of ALOV has been dramatically reduced without sacrificing quality.
Compatibility:
ALOV: UW is fully compatible with all mods. If you are a mod author who intends to ship videos in your mod, please get in touch - I am happy to help create ultra-wide versions.
As with ALOV 4K, you must run your game at a minimum of 60fps to ensure smooth performance with this mod. If the game does not maintain a constant 60+ fps severe desynchronisation may occur. Installation:
Note: ALOV is an exception to normal mod installation rules. It is NOT a texture mod. Nor is it a traditional content mod as it does not contain any game package files. This means you can install ALOV whenever you want. Before textures, after textures, whenever. No need to restore your game to vanilla to install!
Note that it will still overwrite your game movie files, so make a backup in the mod manager. Issues? With the exception of one or two loading screens, everything is in 21:9 format.
NOTE: the Lair of the Shadow Broker car chase cutscene is **intensive**. As with the regular ALOV 4k version, cutscenes may desynchronise if frame rates drop below a constant 60fps. See the link below for more information.
OTHER MODS may have their own videos which will not be in ultrawide format. Mods which override some 21:9 videos:
LE3 Opening Remaster
Audemus’ Happy Ending Mod
Project Variety
Citadel Epilogue Mod
LE1 Diversification Project
Take Earth Back*
Improved wards skybox*
* patched and included in the “community mods cutscenes…” mod found in the main and optional files sections. The others are being worked on but I don’t have a delivery estimate.
For difficulties not relating to aspect ratio, please check existing issues on the ALOV mod page. For everything else, get in touch -let me know what you think on the Comments page or tech support on the Bugs page.
Thanks!
