About this mod

Intelligent Textures produced some kind of "bumpish blurry halo" effect for Hlaalu exterior walls. This is my take to fix this blur, and fix the pattern repetitiveness, without sacrificing defined shapes, using frequency separation. version 1.1b

Intelligent Textures Addendum - Hlaalu Unblurred

v1.1b June 2024
openMW compatible, by essence.

As you can see from the comparisons uploaded in images tab, AI up-scales of  Intelligent Textures for Hlaalu walls (re)produced some kind of "bump-ish blurry halo" effect. When looking at the uncompressed vanilla source, you can see the beginning of this effect happening, up-scaling made it dramatically obvious. This is my take to fix this blur, and fix the pattern repetitiveness, without sacrificing defined shapes, using frequency separation.

Side note, Morrowind Enhanced textures user, yes, the very same bump-ish blur is happening to you as well, despite the huge 4096px upscale. Also, MET does alter vanilla colors sometimes, visible in the third comparison pictures, where shadow hues have been slightly shifted to blue.

  • version 1.0 - Actual unblurring
  • version 1.1a - Manual edit to diminish pattern repetitiveness
  • version 1.1b - Final edit to diminish pattern repetitiveness

Install

Drag and drop.
Load order: after Intelligent Textures.
You can also use this addendum with Morrowind Enhanced Textures, again, load it after MET.

For those interested in retexturing, here is my process, roughly, using Gimp:

frequency separation
wavelet decompose 7 layers:
scale 1 untouched
scale 2 untouched
scale 3 untouched
scale 4 untouched
scale 5 opacity 50
scale 6 opacity 50
scale 7 opacity 33

recover contrast
hard brush to recover some edges and/or select dark regions from source

apply vanilla hue/chroma (thanks to Morrowind Uncompressed Vanilla Textures)
uncompressed vanilla - chroma layer mode
uncompressed vanilla - hue layer mode

Merge layers, export BC1, Kaiser interp mipmaps
