Harpies are small and fierce feathered creatures that resemble a hybrid of a woman and a bird. These creatures have a wide geographical distribution, but occur mainly in High Rock and Hammerfell, fiercely defending their nests with their sharp claws and wind and shock magic, in dangerous matriarchal flocks. In Skyrim, because of their dislike for cold weather, Harpies only occur in the Reach region, close to the border with the two previously mentioned provinces.

Considered by scholars as sentient but primitive, similar to Goblins, although possessing a type of culture even scarcer than these, due to their often hostile behavior that prevented much contact over time it may be that the Harpy culture has more to offer than is currently thought.

Despite not being properly advanced, and living in primitive societies, they are capable of a rudimentary language that can be learned by other races, and it is notable that they are interested in the use of ornaments, especially jewelry and metals. This last detail is particularly interesting, as Harpies are fascinated by shiny objects and, as they do not have the ability to manufacture them, they have gained a reputation as thieves, for blatantly stealing everything that shines and that they can carry to their nests.

These nesting areas are made in small colonies of 3 or 4 bulky, fiercely protected nests. This species often builds its nests near Dwemer ruins, which attract Harpies due to the amount of shiny golden Dwemer metal in the area, which they use to decorate their nesting sites, as well as wearing it as jewelry, in the form of bracelets, rings, earrings or necklaces.

This interest in metallic ornaments, especially golden ones, allowed several exchanges in the past between them and other races, and there are also reports of Harpies asking other sentient beings for help when their nests were attacked, or they were under threat. In these cases, they proved themselves perfectly capable of acting civilly, just as the Goblins also proved themselves capable when the opportunity arose. Despite this, in most places they are still seen as pests, largely through their own fault, and are regularly exterminated by mercenaries.

There are myths that say that the small common Harpies reproduce by capturing men and mating with them, killing their hostages after the sexual intercourse. This has increased prejudice and fear towards Harpies, but it is probably a misunderstanding that they capture men and they reproduce using them. The absence of male Harpies can be compared to the absence of Giantesses: they are there, they are just difficult to find. But, from what little we know about their culture, anything is possible.

However, there are reports of romantic relationships between Harpies and races of man, elf or even beastfolk, which denotes that they can have a romantic or sexual interest in other species.Nonetheless, is worth noting that there are other types of Harpies and relatives, which have much more aggressive and cruel behavior, much more primitive minds, and even similar sizes to those of a human, which would often not hesitate to capture and rape a human male for their own pleasure.

All Harpies are, however, carnivorous, and do not mind devouring a human who dares to enter their nesting areas, which are easily noticed from a distance due to the foul smell that the Harpies emit with the flapping of their wings.

As for physiognomy, common Harpies appear in different plumage variants, but they all have a similar appearance. They are all small, have only four limbs, with the two arms also serving as wings, and their faces are humanoid. The feet and hands are avian, ending in long sharp claws. The entire body is covered in feathers, with the wings and head having long plumes.
