With that out of the way, the following is the relevant lore within the Lupine lore
*Excerpts from the written records of a lupine archivist, entitled Designs of the Lupine*
The Lupine, lycanthropes whom have fallen deaf to the call of the hunt, and listening to a new call, one faint and ancient. The Lupine, in whatever form they may be, have always carried the Lycanthropic curse. Whether they be one cursed against their will, or one who seeks to overthrow their natural tendencies, both of the beast, and of themselves. This is the crux of the Lupine, rejecting the influence of Hircine or any other being which would manipulate them for the gain of the being and not the individual. Lupine seek a life (and death) other than what is offered by Hircine, or any other being without the desire to improve the condition of its followers and worshippers. Instead the Lupine follow an ancient spirit, long forgotten...
Now, onto the topic at hand. The Ziovendian, the nomadic Lupine of Falkreath and the Reach. Living in many hidden dens spread across the area they roam, they live in smaller units than most other Lupine, oftentimes only 1 to 3 families in a den at most. The Ziovendian though spread, are very well connected to each other, and feel that their pack is their second family.
On the subject of the Ziovendian, I have found the diversity among them both fascinating and enlightening to their culture amongst the Lupine. As the most diverse among the Lupine found in Skyrim, the Ziovendian contain members from many of the races to be found on Tamriel. Breton, Nord, Khajiit, Imperial, whatever race you can imagine has likely had some influence upon the culture of the Ziovendian.
One major aspect of this, has been the emphasis on bodypaints, the Ziovendian being the pack first to adopt such practices, which have spread to the others, and taken upon their own styles. This has likely come about due to a considerable number of Ziovendian Lupine being of Reachman and Nordic backgrounds, both of which have had an honored tradition in the art in times past. Over time the designs have diversified and taken their own shape.
Each paint holds a special meaning to the Ziovendian Lupine, and with proper usage, was an effective way to show status, identity, and enhance the beauty of the body. On observation of the paints in person, one would likely notice that most if not all have the Ziovendian Print incorporated into the design.
The first, and perhaps the most honored of paints, the Mother paint. This paint is given to mothers upon giving birth to their children. For the Ziovendian, the role of a mother is incredibly important, as the mother provides loving care for their children, raising the future generation with assistance from her husband. The Ziovendian Print, painted by her husband's hand upon her body, is to help her child remember their origin and roots. The paint is easily identifiable by the markings running down the spine, chest and legs, with additional markings running around the calves and forearms. For a Ziovendian Mother, bearing this paint is the greatest honor she can hold, and one she wears for many years, until the paint eventually wears itself away and though a new paint may take its place, the honor of Motherhood never leaves her.
The Hunter, one of the earliest and most basic of paints, applied to those whom hunt the lands of Skyrim, these paints imply a great deal of important to the aspects of stealth and silence. Those whom wear this paint are greatly burdened with the task of providing food for their family, and helping to support others within the pack. The paints design is meant to be applied however it will best serve the user in their environment, with an identifying characteristic being the Ziovendian Print on the naval. Oftentimes the paint used in the application has a small amount of extracted scents from the local environment to help cover the scent of the user. Seeing one wearing this paint often implies one whom is familiar with the hunt, but not controlled by it, hunting for the purposes of support, not for the joy of killing. The roll of Hunter is one which displays a great deal of self control and prowess over oneself, in addition to a great dedication to the Lupine way.
The Auricha, a paint worn by the Auricha, the elite guardians of the Ziovendian. This paint signified one whom was an asset in both combat and diplomacy. The primary difference between a simple Guardian and an Auricha, is that of both experience and duration. The position of an Auricha is one that required a great deal more training and dedication than that of a Guardian. Amongst the most elite of the Auricha, special markings are worn in addition to the Auricha paint. The paint is easily identifiable by its diamond shaped hollows in the design which a veteran Auricha will fill in with special markings, as well as the traditional design opening at the top and bottom of the torso. Additional markings can be found down the thighs and across the shoulder and arms. The position of an Auricha is one treated with a great deal of reverence, as the Auricha protect the Ziovendian from major threats.
The Woodwalker, the paint of those whom live in the woods. While most Lupine live in dens, the Woodwalkers have taken the nomadic lifestyle of the Ziovendian to another level. The Woodwalkers have made the outside world their homes, living amongst whatever they can find. They serve a special roll amongst the Ziovendian, serving as roaming sentries, observing the behaviors of wildlife and the behaviors of the locals. The design features a uniquely rugged design, appearing to be more roughly applied than most of the other Ziovendian paints I have encountered. The paint can also easily be recognized by the design upon the legs and feet, covering most of the legs with areas exposed on the outer side, with a unique design on the feet. A Woodwalker loves nature, spending a great deal of time both preserving and observing it.
The Nightscout, a paint worn by those gifted with keen senses. Among the Ziovendian, the Nightscout serves an incredibly important role, they observe the behaviors of those hostile towards the Lupine in their area. Nightscouts have often been Khajiit, as heightened senses are often advantageous towards this purpose. As a result, the design of their bodypaint reflects the commonness of Khajiit in the role. One can easily identify the bodypaint due to it incorporating stripes and a generally more wild design. The Nightscout watches over the enemies of the Ziovendian, and work to protect their way of life.
The Denmaker, a paint worn by the engineers and constructors. The Denmaker works to create places which the Ziovendian can call home, making each familiar, and working to create protections from intruders for them. A Denmaker is skilled in enchantment and design, each den resembling the others, but unique in its own way, to help weary travelling Ziovendian feel at home. The design can easily be identified by the separated “plates” that make up the bodypaint, as well as that the paint is normally featured on only one side of the body, to represent the familiarity that they help to create, but also that each location is different, or the blank opposite side. The Denmaker works to help their fellow Ziovendian to have a place to have some respite and to ensure that the Dens will function as a home for the families of whichever Ziovendian may live there.
Thirian Markings, an unusual paint amongst the Ziovendian. The Thirian Markings are given to those who have endured the Trials of Thirian, a set of trials that test the limits of one's abilities to see through lies and deception, all while facing their pasts and unresolved emotions. One can quickly identify Thirian Markings due to their sharp edges and waved hollows, though the primary thing that one will notice is the eye-like design on the back. Thirian Markings denote one whom has faced their past, accepted that it cannot be changed, and that one must move onto the future.
The Guardian, a paint denoting one whom is functioning as a member of the Ziovendian Lupine. Guardian is a roll that ever Lupine bears, regardless of their pack, though how it is shown depends on the pack. Ziovendian Guardians are amongst all other classes, as each Ziovendian is incredibly capable of defending themselves due to the nature of being a Lupine. The Ziovendian Guardian bodypaint can often be identified by its somewhat imprecise tribal design, as it is the first paint a Lupine will bear, until they attain to another class on top of it. The duty of every Lupine is to serve as a guardian to their family and their den.
The Gericlaw, mysterious markings passed down amongst the Ziovendian. The Gericlaw, is the name of a bodypaint passed on by the Ziovendian from generation to generation. It is often worn by Ziovendian explorers, as a token of good luck of sorts. It is believed that if one is lost, that the Gericlaw paint will help guide them to their destination. Perhaps someday it’s true purpose will be discovered.
The Pathfinder, the bodypaint worn by those given the honour of Pathfinder. The Pathfinder’s are oftentimes those among the Lupine whom have helped others to become Lupine. The Ziovendian Pathfinder can easily be identified sharp and soft components, interconnecting differently depending on the area of the body, and the paint not extending far down the legs and arms.. This bodypaint represents one whom has given much of their own to others freely, be it time, possession, or care, helping them to obtain self-mastery and control over their abilities.
