About this mod

CLASS separates racial bonuses from your starting skills. Start your new character off with the skills they should have.

Classes in Morrowind and Oblivion dictated everything about how your skills would grow with your character. Skyrim changed this model so that your skills aren't dependent on your class, letting your build be defined by how you choose to play the game instead of the other way around. Generally, I think this is a good change.
Moving starting skill bonuses to races was a part of that change I don't like. If your skills are defined by what you do, instead of what you are, making skills uniform across a race is not in line with that idea. Not every member of any race has the same background or training, and that's what I feel the starting skills should represent.

Classes Lite: Assigned Starting Skills reintroduces classes, but only to determine what your character's starting background and skills. When you close the race menu for the first time in character creation, you'll be prompted to reset racial skill bonuses and select the starting bonuses for a class instead. Optionally, you may create a custom class if you enable these. I don't recommend this, the pre-built classes may encourage more diverse builds than are typically used otherwise, but I expect people will want this so it can be enabled.

Specific values for the starting levels of regular skills, your Major skill, and your Minor skills may be selected in the MCM.

CLASS also optionally changes how starting spells work. If this option is enabled, starting spells will not be allocated by your race. Instead, if your class has a magical Major skill, you will be able to take a free Novice starting spell in that school of magic.

At any time, you may compare your current highest skills to your class's skills in the MCM to see if the class matches the way you play - maybe you pick a different class next time.

Compatibility
Probably compatible.

Race mods: You may use this with any race mod. It will not affect the passive abilities of any race, only what skills start at what level. I currently use Jelidity's Racial Abilities.
Alternate Start mods: This mod runs once after you close character creation menu, which happens early in alternate start mods. Tested with all popular alternate start mods except for Skyrim Unbound Reborn. That one looked like a headache and I don't use it so who knows if it's compatible with that.
Starting spells: Most alternate start mods use the vanilla method. Again, Skyrim Unbound Reborn seems to be doing its own thing, not tested with this mod. Aetherius's starting spells addon and Lost Races of Aetherius have dedicated handling.

Adding Your Own Classes
Copy the Default.json file, add your own class to it by copying the structure of existing classes, change the path or filename in config.json to the new file, otherwise updates to this mod may wipe out your changes. This system may or may not become more versatile in future, depending on how much more of my life I want to burn on file loading, validating, and parsing in Papyrus. So far it isn't much.
