Uses SkyPatcher to set most of unique NPCs as Protected. Preventing them from being killed by dragons or bandits or any other bad bois out (or in) there, but not the Dragonborn himself.
Covers townsfolk, villagers, nobles, and all non-hostile sorts (also few dogs), including DB targets which you can still kill. Omits NPCs that already are permamently essential in vanilla (although it doesn't override the flag anyway), and of course those that are supposed to die by game (eg. Margret, Susanna the Wicked).
Also makes nearly all vanilla followers essential.
May make the game a bit unimmersive, it's only for those who don't like poor folk randomly dying out of nowhere. Mods like Run For Your Lives are still recommended either way. Still needs some thorough testing, but shouldn't cause any quest issues overall (I guess).
Gets baked into savegames, so in case you want to remove certain NPC's protection later, perform these console commands on the NPC:
setessential {BaseID} 1 setessential {BaseID} 0
Or install the provided reversion option for all affected NPCs (followers revert to protected) - not tested, glhf. Recommended to fast travel somewhere, wait at least 24h, travel again, save game, then remove the mod.
