About this mod

This mod makes torches cast shadows in a simple way.

2024 update: You are probably better off avoiding this, as alternatives like Torches Cast Shadows SE and Haze Lights do a better job of achieving the same thing.

This mod was just me learning xEdit and making a quick fix to add shadows to torches, but the quick way is not always the best and there's a reason the other mods do more than just edit the shadow-casting flag. And since you need a file from Haze Lights to fix an issue with this mod, you're better off just using Haze Lights instead of this completely.

Also: Light Limit Fix exists now which should help a lot with any light flickering (not compatible with ENB, it is built for Community Shaders which I can strongly recommend). I've not had the chance to play the game much with it installed, but it seems like it's the light flicker fix that we've needed for a long time.

End of 2024 message.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This mod adds a flag to the torch making it cast a dynamic shadow.

I made it as an alternative to Torches Cast Shadows SE. That mod does a lot more, even tries to get around the engine limit for lights (only a maximum of 4 dynamic lights can be active close to each other, and if there's more the lights/shadows will flicker) by automatically turning the torch shadows on and off depending on how many other lights are close. So if you prefer that feel free to use that instead.

My mod is a lot simpler in that it makes the torch always cast dynamic shadows, and essentially ignores the engine limit problem. So the flickering lights issue might be more frequent with my mod than with Torches Cast Shadows SE.

Dynamic Shadows for Skyrim does the exact same thing as my mod, but for a lot more things than just torches. So if you are using that then you don't need my mod.

The mod is packed into a fomod installer, where you can choose the version you want to install. The compatibility versions will copy the values such as color and radius from the other mod, since my mod will otherwise overwrite those.

Compatibility:

Compatible (load before my mod)

Compatible (patch included in installer)

Incompatible

* - Simply Better Torches only edits the same record as mine, so it is impossible for me to make a patch and my mod will completely overwrite that mod. So if you like/use this version please go and endorse that mod. All credit goes to Simtar123, as I copied their values over to my mod.

Known issues:

  • Skyrim has an infamous engine bug where there can only be 4 shadow-casting lights close to each other. If there are more than that the lights will flicker. My mod makes the torch into a shadow-casting light so it may make the flickering appear.

  • The torch will make your character and the torch itself cast a shadow down on the ground, which can look weird in 3rd person. The only solution I can think of would be to disable the character's shadow from the torch, and I have no idea how to do that. This problem is not visible in normal 1st person. - See sticky post in the comments section for details.
