A short* instruction on how to enable "FSR" for Skyrim using magpie.
Get a Boost in Frames for Your Games
FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) uses cutting-edge upscaling technologies to help boost your framerates and deliver high-quality, high-resolution gaming experiences, without having to upgrade to a new graphics card.

Introduction

With the upcoming release of Skyrim's Anniversary Edition it is expected that AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution or FSR could be one of the main added features for game optimization, enabling users to reach 120fps on PS4, Xbox One and later versions of the consoles. Bethesda is one of the many game companies that will integrate AMD's software technology which can be seen here, and it has an upcoming support for The Elder Scrolls Online, so we can assume that the anniversary edition of Skyrim will have it.

But why wait two more weeks when you can have it today?

Using Blinue's Magpie to emulate FSR on any game. In just *eight steps!
Skyrim is one of the most modded games but not all modders' machines can run it well, treat this as a crutch of a mod to help run the game faster.

Software

These are applications that can assist with the operation of FSR on your machine:

BethINI
This is the Nexus' resident settings adjustment program for Bethesda games that has better presets for optimized settings, this is also the program I use to customize the resolution for Magpie to upscale to your screen.

Magpie
The main software that will upscale and sharpen the image of your game similar to AMD's FSR.
The language may be daunting, but all you need from it is the file the arrow is pointing at. To install it.

Process Lasso - Optional
A real-time CPU optimizer that you can use to customize the priority of your running programs which behave similar to Skyrim Priority SE, but for any software. This helps run Magpie smoother and lets you prioritize Skyrim as the main executable.

NVIDIA Driver or Radeon Software for AMD
Your GPU driver might play a role in the optimization of the programs. AMD's Radeon Software has a built in image sharpener to help retain some details, making the running graphics appear to have a higher resolution by sharpening the rendered image. I don't know what team green has to offer but having the latest drivers might improve your user experience.

Instructions

  • Install the software listed above.
  • Set-up BethINI to direct the .ini path file for your game to work with your preferred mod manager. Refer to the recommended usage.
  • Set the resolution to your preferred performance settings and run the game windowed. See tables below.
  • Run Skyrim
  • Run Magpie
  • Set-up Magpie options to the following image to maintain smooth operation in running the game. The recommended FSR Sharpness should not be set higher than 80 percent.

  • Click on "Scale after 5s" then tab to Skyrim within five seconds.
  • Five seconds after clicking on Magpie's button to upscale, the windowed program should fit to fullscreen on your monitor enabling FSR to the running game. Done.

Recommendations

Using AMD's Radeon Software add Magpie to the games list.
Then from there you can set it's Radeon Image Sharpening to your liking. I set SkyrimSE at 40%, then Magpie at an additional 20%.

Then another 40% on FSR Sharpness on the Magpie app. This ensures that the detail lost in the upscale is kept to a minimum with results almost indiscernible from native resolution, except in screenshots and on the HUD.

Set-up Process Lasso to run Skyrim at 'High' priority and Magpie at 'Above normal' priority.
Run Process Lasso while Skyrim and Magpie are active processes to detect them.

Afterword

These set of instructions on how to use FSR I have to give some credit to a brief video I followed, with some software removed due to better replacements available, or are unnecessary to simplify usage of FSR for Skyrim.

I started using FSR to counterbalance the fps drop from using ENB.

Disclaimer: These set of instructions are made by an amateur modder with a lack of  knowledge on the proper terminologies used for the installation and function of the sited programs and not fully literate in any computer language.
