Most of us know the general story of Roggvir. A Solitude gate guard who was deemed to be responsible for the escape of Ulfric Stormcloak after High King Torygg was killed in a dual. It left the player with a lot of questions as much of the details are vague first and second-hand accounts:

  • Was the dual fair?
  • Would Ulfric have won without shouting?
  • Was the death of Torygg necessary?
  • Did Roggvir know what just transpired when he let Ulfric go?

It was never clear if Roggvir could answer these questions, or if he was even capable of stopping Ulfric if he tried. Despite this, Roggvir was sentenced to be executed. As the player, you could intervene, but Roggvir's death was scripted.

With About Roggvir..., Roggvir is no longer scheduled for an immediate execution. Instead, he is imprisoned awaiting his execution. You now have the choice to kill him yourself, help Roggvir escape, or let justice be carried out as it was meant to be. Should you wait too long on deciding to help or kill Roggvir, you now have the option to intervene in his execution and help him escape.

If Roggvir able to live, he will be welcomed by Ulfric as an honorary guest. If Imperials should lose control of Solitude, Roggvir will return to his family a free man.

What will you do? Roggvir's fate is in your hands.

FAQ

What disguises can you give Roggvir?

Any Imperial set, you can mix types. May not be perfectly compatible with all mods that add additional armor to Imperial armor class, but it's not too hard to come by Imperial armor.


How long do you have to save Roggvir?

An infinite amount of time if you never set foot in Solitude until it is captured. Once About Roggvir is started (you either found him or heard about him, you will see the quest start), you have 7 in-game days. The execution begins the next time you enter Solitude.


Can Roggvir be killed?

Yes. During the escape attempt, during the execution, or by your hands in the dungeon.


Can Roggvir be added as a permanent follower?

Yes and no. This mod doesn't add that feature, but other mods do. Download a follower framework mod that allows you to make NPCs into followers. Roggvir is already recognized as a follower candidate by NFF. I recommend waiting to do this until after you have completed the About Roggvir... quest to lower chance of conflict.

Stuff given to Roggvir is moved to a sack in his cell after he has been freed, just in case you gave him something rare and didn't remove it before reaching Windhelm. Before this stuff is taken you probably could use a follower framework to add him and take it that way too.


What does Roggvir do once freed?

After escaping solitude, Roggvir is made essential until he reaches Windhelm. Once in Windhelm, he lives in the Palace of Kings as a guest to Ulfric Stormcloak. Should Stormcloaks (or another faction) take over Solitude, Roggvir will live with Addvar. He will also spend time at the Blue Palace and Winking Skeever for parts of the day.


Can I use this in an existing game?

I'm going to say no to be safe from this point forward. This mod also edits the hidden quest "Solitude Opening" and since this starts when your game does this could have unintended consequences.


Is Roggvir voiced?

He is, somewhat minimally. The lines that are available are either recycled or spliced vanilla lines. He is not voiced extensively as a follower mod might. There are some non-essential dialogue options to improve the experience.
