About this mod

This mod removes certain profanity / cursing from the English voice and subtitles in the game, replacing it with ***. The Light version removes fu**, sh** and variants of those words.

Changelogs
I made this mod primarily for myself, but thought I'd put it out here in case others would find it useful.

Update 2.1 is out now, which adds filtering to both the voice and the subtitles.

Update 3.0 has been released as of 23 August 2019.  This update includes many of the words I initially missed, adds a few extra words (mainly those that refer to genitalia), and tries to correct the lipsync issues.

I eventually plan to make two versions of this mod:  Light and Heavy.

Light (the only version that will be made): Main focus was to filter out two words (fu** and sh**) and their variants.  Version 3.0 added in a few additional words (d*ck, pr*ck, p*ssy, c*nt) and their variants.  The mod contains two files: an edited/repacked en.w3strings file for the subtitles, and an edited/repacked enpc.w3speech file.  The w3speech file contains 999 edited sound files.  Summary of words removed:
Fu** and its variants: ~600
Sh** and its variants: ~400
D*ck and its variants: ~100
C*nt and its variants: ~50

Heavy: 8/23/19 There will be no "heavier" version of this mod made. I added a few words to the Light filter, so it is a bit "heavier" than original.

Known Bugs:
I have tried to correct the main issue that was present in version 2.0, which was the lipsync errors.  I've now figured out how to include the modified lipsync files, so if that doesn't fix the issue with lipsync, then I'm not sure what will.  :)

Having said that, there will very likely be instances where the lipsync doesn't totally match up with the voices.  It's not something I plan to fix, so if it really bothers you that much, look at some other part of the scene during that line of dialogue.  :)

I have found that most, if not all, instances where the voice file has been edited have broken the lipsync with the characters.  Thus, for whoever is speaking that specific line, their mouth will not move for that portion of the dialogue.  All other unedited lines work just fine. The ultimate impact is on about 785 audio files out of 63,800, or 1% of the dialogue.

I honestly don't know how to fix it, as I've had no luck with the lipsync process from rmemr's mod (link below).  When I repacked the w3speech file, I included the unedited .cr2w lipsync file with the edited audio, thinking this would still move the lips the same even though the audio was edited, but it does not appear to do that.  I've got no idea how to fix this, so if you try this and it is truly a deal-breaking issue for you, roll back the mod to the subtitle-only version or delete the mod altogether.  Or, if you know your stuff, feel free to unpack the speech files and see if you can figure out what I couldn't!
In order to try and keep the dialogue text the same length on the screen, I replaced each letter with a *, so if the word was fu**er, it shows as ******.

By way of full disclaimer:
  • I have not tested every instance of this dialog in the game.  I've done my best to remove the words from all instances of text/strings and their associated dialogue, but it is possible that there are in-game movies or other things in the environment that contain these words and would not be filtered out.  Do let me know if I miss something somewhere.
  • I have the GOTY edition from GOG, so have not tested this with just the base game or Steam edition.  The files contains text and voice from the entire game, including the expansions, but I do not believe it will cause any impact if you just have the base game or only one of the expansions.
  • If you have additional user-made DLC content with text, this will not edit those.

Big credit due to rmemr for the w3strings encoder and w3speech tools and lipsync generator mod, and their accompanying instructions, for enabling me to do this.
