‘Peaky Blinders’ film confirmed at Netflix, Cillian Murphy returning as Tommy Shelby

"It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me"

Netflix has officially confirmed that a Peaky Blinders film is in the works.

Last night (June 4), Netflix announced the film’s confirmation on social media, sharing a picture of what is assumed to be the film’s script. In the post, Netflix wrote: “Tommy Shelby returns. A Peaky Blinders Film starring Cillian Murphy is coming to Netflix”.

It remains to be seen if the upcoming movie will be titled A Peaky Blinders Film, or if that is the movie’s current working title.

The post also includes a quote from Murphy, who said: “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me… It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This one is for the fans.”

A release date for Netflix’s Peaky Blinders has yet to be announced, with Deadline Hollywood reporting that production is set to begin later this year. It will be written by Steven Knight and directed by Tom Harper.

While plot details and other members of the cast have yet to be announced, Steven Knight revealed to Deadline that the film is being set during World War II. Knight added about the film: “I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen. It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”

Tom Harper added: “When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive. Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”

Speaking to NME earlier this year, Knight said of the movie: “I think the film is gonna be a step up again, and it’s gonna be great that Peaky fans can meet in one place and watch it. The budget will be bigger, but also because we know we’re ending this chapter, we’re all going to try to do our best.”

Netflix is reportedly developing two separate spin-off shows based on characters from the crime drama series. These are set to follow the Shelby gang’s operations in Boston, as well as a prequel about the life of a young Polly Gray, who was played by Helen McCrory in the original series.
