Fontaines D.C. release wistful new single ‘Favourite’

Frontman Grian Chatten described the song as having “this never-ending sound to it, a continuous cycle from euphoria to sadness, two worlds spinning forever”

Fontaines D.C. have released their brand-new wistful single, ‘Favourite’ – watch the nostalgic music video down below.

The track is the latest to be shared from the Irish band, as they gear up to share their latest album ‘Romance‘. So far, it has been previewed by its pummelling lead single ‘Starburster’.

Now, Fontaines D.C. have dropped ‘Favourite’, which serves as the closing song on ‘Romance’. It’s a song which frontman Grian Chatten describes as having “this never-ending sound to it, a continuous cycle from euphoria to sadness, two worlds spinning forever”.

The band also shared an accompanying music video, featuring home footage of all five members stitched together. Documenting a recent trip to Madrid, where guitarist Carlos O’Connel was born and grew up, bassist Conor Deegan said of the video: “This video is a reminiscing of the past; of each other’s childhoods we didn’t know. To see people we know on an intimate level as adults in the tender ages of childhood, we explore where we came from, and who on some level, still are.”

He added he wanted the video “to serve as a way of honouring our friendships, and moving from that, the relationships we hold dear. Our mothers, fathers, siblings, aunties and uncles, grandmothers and grandfathers. Those who we still have, and those we have sadly lost.

“We haven’t lost that connection to each other, and are not afraid to come of age again, holding on to romance in a sometimes trying world.” Watch the video for ‘Favourite’ below:

Fontaines D.C.’s upcoming album ‘Romance’ is due this August. Produced by James Ford (Arctic MonkeysFoalsDepeche Mode), it will also be the band’s first album released through XL Recordings (RadioheadKing KruleThe xx).

Speaking about the title of the album, Deegan said: “We’ve always had this sense of idealism and romance. Each album gets further away from observing that through the lens of Ireland, as directly as ‘Dogrel‘. The second album (‘A Hero’s Death‘) is about that detachment, and the third (Skinty Fia) is about Irishness dislocated in the diaspora. Now we look to where and what else there is to be romantic about.”

He added: “This record is about deciding what’s fantasy – the tangible world, or where you go in your mind. What represents reality more? That feels almost spiritual for us.”

In a review of their new single ‘Starburster’, NME rated it five stars, adding: “This could be a very bloody special time for Fontaines D.C. In the coming months, there’s potential for a ‘I was there moment’ when they headline Friday’s Park Stage at Glastonbury, and a joyous collection of their flowers when they return to Reading & Leeds’ main stage on the week of album release in August, celebrating would could be yet another definitive record from the band of their generation.
