Listen to J. Cole join Cash Cobain on new drill track ‘Grippy’

This is J. Cole's first release since removing his Kendrick Lamar diss track from streaming services

J. Cole has collaborated with rising rapper-producer Cash Cobain on ‘Grippy’ – a remix of the latter’s viral ‘Dunk Contest’.

‘Dunk Contest’ was first released in January this year and is Cobain’s biggest solo single. On ‘Grippy’, he reworked the song with Cole as they both poetically rap about getting intimate with a special lady.

Cole kicked off the track, talking about a woman he saved in his phone as “Grippy” – following Cobain’s typical raunchy nature. He raps: “She like my kick game / And when you me you don’t kick game / I put her front row at the Knick game / Now she in my phone with a nickname.”

Then the Bronx native can be heard rapping his original ‘Dunk Contest’ lyrics: “Marni, Marni / I don’t wanna talk ’bout Marni / I don’t think that I should talk ’bout Marni / Fuck it, I’ma talk about Marni.”

The song is Cole’s first release since his brief rap battle with Kendrick Lamar. On the 2023 single ‘First Person Shooter’, the North Carolina star called himself, Lamar and Drake “the big three” of modern rap music. In March this year, Lamar threw this statement back in Cole’s face on the Metro Boomin-produced ‘Like That’. “Motherfuck the big three,” he declared, “N****, it’s just big me”.

This led to Cole sending a rebuttal on ‘7 Minute Drill from his most recent mixtape ‘Might Delete Later’, rapping: “I’m hesitant, I love my brother, but I’m not gonna lie / I’m powered up for real, that shit would feel like swattin’ a fly / Four albums in twelve years, n****, I can divide / Shit, if this is what you want, I’m indulgin’ in violence.”

Cole later retracted and admitted he regretted the move when he was performing a headlining slot at Dreamville Festival 2024 – saying onstage that he thinks his response on ‘7 Minute Drill’ was the “lamest, goofiest shit”. He has since removed the song from all streaming platforms this April.

Recently, Cobain appeared with Don Toliver for the latter’s latest single ‘Attitude’ alongside Charlie Wilson. Earlier this month, he put out the remix to another one of his viral songs ‘Fisherrr’ featuring Bay Swag and Ice Spice.

The ‘Rump’ star is currently in the process of making his forthcoming ‘Play Cash Cobain’ EP, which will be creatively directed by Drake. Cobain worked with the 6God before – on the Canadian’s recent album ‘For All The Dogs’, he helped produce ‘Calling For You’ with 21 Savage with Lil Yachty, 40 and more.

In an interview with NME last December, Cobain revealed how he came up with the concept of “sexy drill” – the new rap phenomenon where producers fuse sultry R&B with drill basslines.

“It literally just came to me,” Cobain said. “I had a sample, I put the sample in the beat and I just started building drill drums around it. I didn’t think nothing of it, I didn’t think it was going to be such a big thing. I just thought I was just doing what I normally do; making a beat with my own sauce.”
