We were pleased to learn that Pacific University has chosen to rename the Harvey Scott building for former U.S. Rep. Les AuCoin, who proved to be an outstanding advocate for Indigenous people in our area, (“Pacific University renames campus building for former U.S. Rep. Les AuCoin,” Sept. 26).
It is time for others to follow the practice of renaming buildings that were originally named for racist leaders. We hope that Portland Parks and Recreation will follow Pacific University’s lead. Mt. Scott Park was also named for Harvey Scott; when the Mt. Scott Community Center in the park reopens after renovation, it too should have a new name.
