Grammy-winning R&B icon Brandy, who first cemented her place in horror history as a final girl in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, continues to solidify her legacy in the genre with her latest role in A24's The Front Room.
As one of the few Black final girls, Brandy brings a powerful presence to the screen, once again demonstrating her ability to navigate the treacherous waters of horror. In this film, she stars as Belinda, a newly-pregnant woman whose life descends into chaos when her malevolent mother-in-law, played by Kathryn Hunter, moves in with dark intentions.
Brandy's portrayal of Belinda, who must confront both psychological and supernatural horrors, offers a fresh perspective in the horror landscape. As her character fights to keep her unborn child safe from the clutches of a diabolical force, Brandy continues to break new ground, reinforcing her status as a formidable figure in the genre.
In a conversation with Out, the Moesha star shares how she and co-star Hunter kept it together during some of their more serious and outlandish scenes, revealing the answer was “focus.”
“You have to bring it when you’re working Kathryn Hunter,” she began.
“You have to be on your toes because she is such a professional and she has such a resume, you have to be on point.”
The film also showcases her character’s cooking capabilities, to which the Grammy-Award shares she makes an “unbelievable” creamed corn, macaroni and cheese, and fried chicken.
