Pune Rains: 4 Dead, Schools Shut, People Advised To Stay In; CM Shinde Says Will Airlift People If Needed

Four people died, schools were shut, while flood-like situations were also reported in parts of Maharashtra's Pune and its nearby areas like Pimpri Chinchwad, necessitating the deployment of inflatable rubber boats to rescue people after rainwater entered residential areas following torrential downpour.

Red Alert In Pune: Amid heavy overnight rains and persistent downpours, particularly in the catchment areas of dams, parts of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad reported flooding on Thursday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert’ for Pune. Three teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were deployed in Pune on Thursday, with two teams in Ekta Nagar and Singhgad Road and one team in Varje.

4 Dead In Pune Rains: Four people reportedly died in rain-related incidents in Pune in early hours of Thursday. While three persons died due to electrocution through water during the heavy rainfall at Pulachi Wadi in the Deccan Gymkhana area, one person died and another was injured in a landslide that occurred in Adarwadi village in Maval tehsil, as a heavy rock slid and tumbled down the road. The deceased was reportedly a restaurant staffer.

Water Released From Khadakwasla Dam: Due to continuous rainfall in the catchment area of Khadakwasla Dam, the dam reached its full capacity on Thursday. As per information from the District Information Office, the Pune administration increased the speed and released the water into the Mutha River on Thursday at 6 am at a rate of 40,000 cusecs.

Traffic Halted At Tamhini Ghat: Traffic was halted on Thursday at Tamhini Ghat on the Raigad-Pune route following the debris from a landslide as a result of the heavy rains. According to Raigad Police, "Traffic is stopped at Tamhini Ghat in the Raigad-Pune route due to a landslide. Traffic will be stopped for the next few hours until the debris is cleared." Pune District Collector further appealed to citizens not to step out unnecessarily in the heavy downpours.

Schools Shut In Pune: Schools in Pune city and nearby areas were ordered shut for Thursday following an order by collector Suhas Diwase. Apart from Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, Bhor, Velhe, Maval Mulshi, and Khadakwasla were ordered to shut schools. Meanwhile, Pavana dam, the main source of water supply for Pimpri-Chinchwad, had been filled up to 58 per cent of its capacity by Wednesday afternoon following incessant rain in Maval taluka of Pune district.

3 Vehicles Damage After Wall Collapse In Pimpri Chinchwad: Three vehicles were damaged when a compound wall collapsed in Pimpri Chinchwad of Maharashtra's Pune district, on Wednesday morning following heavy rainfall, fire department officials said. According to officials, two four-wheelers and a two-wheeler were damaged in the incident that took place in the Nehru Nagar area of Pimpri Chinchwad.

Schools Shut In Raigad: A holiday has been declared for schools, colleges and other educational institutes in Raigad district of Maharashtra as well on Thursday in the wake of heavy rainfall, officials said. A similar order has been issued for Wada and Vikramgad talukas in Palghar district. The IMD issued a red alert for Raigad district for Wednesday, which continued on Thursday, and predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Mumbai Rains | Andheri Subway Shut: The Andheri Subway in Mumbai was closed for vehicular movement following waterlogging due to heavy rainfall. The rains in Mumbai and the suburbs led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas again. The heavy rainfall overnight aslo disrupted some public transport services causing inconvenience to countless commuters.

Mumbai Airport Ops Hit: Heavy rainfall in Mumbai also disrupted operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Thursday, affecting flight operations. The poor visibility due to the downpour led to a brief suspension of flight operations at 10:36 am. Air India issued an advisory via social media, informing passengers that flights to and from Mumbai could be delayed due to the severe weather.

Pune Rains | 400 Rescued, CM Says Will Airlift People: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday said if the need arises, the rain-hit people will be airlifted in Pune, where incessant downpour claimed four lives and inundated residential colonies and houses in low-lying areas. Meanwhile, about 400 people were evacuated to safety on Thursday following flooding in Sinhagad Road and some other areas along the riverbank in Pune city, officials said.
